An exciting project with a slightly melancholy appearance, but also with beautiful and valuable potential for those who can see beyond its current condition.

"The brand’s most beautiful coupé design of all time, a project offering both breathtaking and exciting possibilities for the enthusiast with the right mindset."

Description

The car was delivered to its first owner in Ängelholm in June 1973. On paper she only kept the car for two years before selling it on, but in practice she remained the first user until the current owner’s brother took over in 1981. Rust took a heavy toll on the car during the 1970s and 1980s, and at the last MOT inspection in December 1987 there was a long list of issues to be addressed.

At that time, the owner left the car with a workshop in Helsingborg—later revealed to be highly questionable—for repairs while he was working at sea. When he returned to collect the car, the grille, steering wheel, carburettor and front bumper were missing. The workshop denied all responsibility and claimed innocence. They turned out to be exactly what they appeared to be: dishonest and fraudulent.

After this, the BMW was stored in various locations, warehouses and barns, where its condition did not improve. The current owner inherited the car from his brother in 2018 and then brought it home—remarkably under its own power after being started at a workshop. He had ambitions to take on the restoration project himself but has since realised that this task will need to be taken on by someone else.

Just over 20 years ago, the undersigned produced a feature that may serve as an audio-visual source of inspiration, even though it concerns an SM-winning 1974 racing car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

After the carburettors had been stolen, the owner sourced a replacement pair. The car was then driven under its own power to its current storage location, and the engine was in fact running as recently as a few months ago.

  • Interior condition:

Original leather upholstery in salvageable condition, as are the door panels, dashboard, controls and trim details. The headliner is intact, as is the hard plastic trim in the boot. However, the original steering wheel is missing following the theft of various parts at the workshop.

  • Exterior condition:

Rust damage is present in the structural beams, sills, doors, boot lid and wheel arches – the car is in need of a full restoration. Original aluminium wheels, including a spare wheel hidden beneath all the clutter in the boot. Given the general desirability of E9 coupés on today’s market, this still represents an interesting project for many to take on.

  • General condition:

A complete project with a few cosmetic parts missing, yet still both well-priced and highly desirable. And on a more subjective note — imagine turning it into a restomod using M-model technology from the 1980s or 1990s… now that would be something special.

Facts about the model

The E9 coupé model has a great and significant motorsport heritage. Many enthusiasts likely think first of the beautifully art-painted factory racing cars, of our own Ronnie Peterson’s successes with the model, and not least of Förenade Bil’s Swedish Championship winners driven by Rune Tobiasson. As if the beautiful design were not enough on its own. A car with direct references to the racing version known as the ‘Batmobile’, with its wings and spoilers, is always attractive in all its versions, even for those who are not particularly drawn to its racing pedigree. Today, the E9 model is sought after in all forms and spare parts are expensive, but its appeal remains undiminished.
