Description

This car was purchased in Ventura, California, by a Swedish Volvo collector in the fall of 2018. He encountered the car and its owner at a Volvo meet and was immediately drawn to it, as it turned out to be one of the last in the 164 series. The car is in untouched original condition, rust-free, and features a manual transmission—a rarity not only in the U.S. but also in Sweden. The manual transmission gives the car a livelier feel, making this find even more special.

The car had three previous owners in the U.S., all residing in the area between Santa Barbara and Ventura. It was imported to Sweden in 2019 and registered in January 2020. In the spring of 2020, it was loaned to Teknikens Värld's test manager for an extended feature trip and has since been used for summer drives over the past four years. During this time, the car was serviced and received new brakes. Additionally, the seats were reupholstered by Color Glo using original Volvo upholstery purchased from VP Autoparts near Borås.

The paint is entirely original, with sun fading on the top surfaces, door dings, minor scratches, and stone chips throughout, but no rust damage. To preserve the car’s wonderful patina and because the paint had become dry and fragile, the owner was advised by an auto body shop to apply a semi-matte two-component clear coat. This was done in the summer of 2022. The details were first removed, the paint was thoroughly cleaned, and then a protective layer of clear coat was applied. The result is so seamless that it’s nearly impossible to detect unless you know about it.

While addressing these improvements, the car also received a professional Dinitrol rust-proofing treatment in the fall of 2022. During the cleaning of the underside, it was confirmed that there were no rust issues under the car—a rarity for this model.

In total, over 70,000 SEK was invested in the upholstery, paint preservation, and rust-proofing, among other improvements. The owner has now decided to sell the car to downsize their collection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and runs well. The gearbox, clutch, power steering, and brakes function as they should. The car has been unused for a year and missed its last inspection, so it will be up to the buyer to arrange that. However, it is permissible to drive a newly purchased car home even if it hasn’t been inspected.

Cars older than 30 years are also exempt from the winter tire requirement unless winter road conditions are present.

Please note, the AC pump has been removed and is missing.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in well-preserved original condition. The carpets, headliner, door panels, and dashboard are in good shape (see photos). The seats have been reupholstered with Volvo's original gray plush upholstery.

The engine bay requires cleaning with a degreaser, as the Dinitrol treatment has left it sticky in several areas.

  • Exterior condition:

Whole and fine body, and original paint with traces of almost 50 years of usage, but no notable damages or rust. Rarely well-maintained and nice, we would say. Even trims and other details in good condition. A small curved chrome trim on the left rear upper fender corner was loose (see picture), so we have placed it in the glove compartment.

  • General condition:

A well-maintained and fully functional car with an excellent history and original documents included (see photos). It’s a joy to own and drive as it is, with its great condition showing light signs of use. After all, it has spent its life in the vicinity of one of the world’s largest cities, with a population of 12 million.

It is also an excellent candidate for a repaint. With no need for bodywork or structural repairs, a new coat of paint would make it truly stunning.

Facts about the model

Volvo had a long and strong tradition of producing six-cylinder large cars up until the 1950s. When the new 140 series was introduced, plans were already underway to refine and modernize this concept.

Design chief Jan Wilsgaard had long envisioned elevating Volvo's styling and brand identity, and with the introduction of the 160 series, the timing was right. The primary competition came from Mercedes, BMW, and Opel, as well as from some American and British car brands.

It was clear that both the design language and technology needed to be more advanced compared to the 140 series. When the Volvo 164 was unveiled, it catered specifically to wealthier and more performance-focused Volvo customers.

The wheelbase was slightly extended to accommodate the longitudinally mounted B30 engine, which required more space in the front. The B30 engine was essentially a "stretched" version of the robust B20 engine. With dual SU carburetors and a large displacement, it produced 130 horsepower.

The design was further enhanced with a completely new front end featuring dual round headlights on each side, a stately Volvo grille, and additional chrome details.

The interior continued the luxury theme, offering leather upholstery, an automatic transmission, and premium features like air conditioning.

The Volvo 164 became immensely popular in the United States, and when Volvo announced the model's discontinuation in anticipation of the V6-powered 264, sales actually increased! As a result, the car remained available in the U.S. for one additional year (through 1975), while production ended in Europe in 1974.

The 1975 U.S. model is distinguished by 264-style tail lamps, seats, a new fuel filler cap, and several other details carried over from the 240 series that debuted that year.

The updated B30E engine with fuel injection delivered a solid 160 horsepower. Combined with the safety, comfort, and performance improvements made to the 140/160 series throughout the 1970s, Volvo enthusiasts consider the Volvo 164E to be one of the finest Volvo classics of all time.
