Facts about the model

In 1908 William Carpo “Billy” Durant established General Motors, but in 1910 the firm was taken over by the bank. Together with the racing driver Louis Chevrolet, who was born in Switzerland, he started the new firm Chevrolet Motor Company. Louis Chevrolet was already employed by Durant since he was the boss at the Buick racing team, because he wanted to gain control over GM again. Since 1918 Chevrolet has belonged to General Motors. In the beginning the cars had 6-cylinder engines, but from 1917 until 1919 there was a V8 with CHV. In 1913 the model H was introduced in order to compete with Ford. This car had a 4-cylinder engine with 14 HP, which was constructed by Arthur Mason. This model was called “490”, after the price of the basic model. Ford model T costs alson 490 Dollars, therefore Ford reduced the price to 440$. In 1917, when the Chevrolet 490 got an electric ignition and self-starter, the price increased to 550$. The Ford model T did not have such modern construction as the Chevrolet 490. The car was produced until 1922.
