"A stable and well-functioning car in well-preserved original condition. Offers stylish and comfortable motoring. Reportedly, much has been serviced and replaced to ensure it remains in good mechanical condition. There are a few cosmetic details that could be addressed if desired, but otherwise it’s simply ready to drive."

Description

Originally sold new in Germany and registered there on April 29, 1991. Passed TÜV inspection without remarks on June 17, 1998, after which it was imported and registered for road use in Sweden on March 26, 1999. The current owner acquired it in July 2019, later registered in his wife’s name in August 2023.

During their ownership, the engine was removed, cleaned, and all internal components measured for wear, condition-tested, and reassembled by Enebyberg Motorrenovering. All gaskets, seals, and wear parts for the engine, both internally and externally, have been replaced. The distributor with cables and the entire ignition system have been renewed (Phoenix Land Rover and Hamilton Motors).

All gaskets and oil in the automatic gearbox and differential have been replaced and thoroughly serviced. All engine belts replaced. New idle control valve and exhaust manifold gasket. New exhaust system with catalytic converter. New axle seals front and rear. Spark plugs and injectors replaced. All springs, shock absorbers, joints, and bushings replaced, as well as chassis mounts. Airflow meter replaced. New tires fitted. Cabin ventilation serviced, including replacement of blower motor. Bushings in the track rods replaced, along with a new fuel pump. Hub seals front and rear replaced. Anti-roll bar joints front and rear replaced, as well as rear control arm mounts.

In addition, regular servicing with oil changes in 2022, 2024, and 2025.

The car has had an original Land Rover front bar fitted, which is included. Also included are various documents from Germany, Swedish inspection records, receipts, as well as the original manuals and service book. Inspected and road-ready.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and the engine and drivetrain ran well. During a short test drive on smaller country roads and in a residential area, the car felt tight and well-functioning in terms of steering, handling, automatic transmission with working kickdown, and strong brakes. Not tested off-road, but according to information all relevant functions work without issues.

It has not been inspected on a lift, but the vital underside areas looked good, and much has been replaced and attended to.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in well-preserved condition with nice leather and good comfort in the seats. Door panels, carpets, and headliner (replaced by a previous owner) are all in good condition. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are well-kept and functional. The wood trim is in good shape, though a small piece has come loose on the driver’s side. All electrical functions are working, including the sunroof. The AC is of uncertain function—reportedly it only needs a refill. The speedometer is a bit sluggish at low speeds but works properly from 20/30 km/h upwards.

  • Exterior condition:

Appears to be largely original paint, in normal condition for its age and mileage. There are scratches, stone chips, minor surface rust, etc. The bumpers show surface rust. Glass, trim, emblems, plastic, rubber, and lighting details are in good condition. Equipped with a tow bar. Original wheels show normal wear but have good tires. Rear wiper and central locking for the tailgate have been removed. No fog lights. A front bar has previously been mounted on the car and is included.

  • General condition:

A cool Range Rover from the early 1990s with an upscale interior, good economy, plastic fuel tank, and other features that made the car increasingly versatile. Presented here in well-preserved condition with much maintenance and updating carried out while retaining its original character. A pleasant and robust classic and enthusiast’s car.

Facts about the model

As early as the 1950s, Rover had plans for—and even built prototypes of—a more car-like and comfortable version of its rugged Land Rover off-roader. But it wasn’t until 1966 that development of the Range Rover began, inspired by the success of American SUVs such as the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wagoneer. The Range Rover was introduced in the summer of 1970. Like the Land Rover, the new model featured solid axles, a separate frame, and aluminum body panels (except for the bonnet and the lower part of the split tailgate). However, the Range Rover received coil springs, disc brakes all around, and permanent four-wheel drive with high and low range. Its engine was the aluminum V8 Rover had purchased from Buick, which had just begun to be used in the large P5. Even though the car was fast and comfortable on the motorway with its V8 and long suspension travel, it was just as capable off-road as the Land Rover. The interior was simple, with vinyl upholstery and rubber floor mats designed to be hosed down after driving in rough terrain. Rover envisioned landowners and country gentlemen as the primary customers, but the Range Rover also appealed to city dwellers, and the company soon had to ramp up production significantly as demand far outstripped supply.

During the turbulent 1970s, British Leyland did not develop its successful model further. This opened the door for outside manufacturers, such as Swiss company Monteverdi, to create their own versions with four doors and more luxury equipment. It wasn’t until 1981 that Range Rover introduced its own four-door model. In 1982, an automatic transmission was offered, and the following year the manual gearbox gained a fifth gear. Range Rover also began to capitalize on its potential as a luxury car with special editions featuring leather upholstery and thick carpets. The Vogue version proved to be the most enduring, remaining the top model in the Range Rover lineup for many years.

The V8 engine was powerful but also thirsty, and particularly on export markets there was demand for a more economical diesel. In 1986, a turbo diesel engine from Italian company VM Motori was introduced, later replaced by Land Rover’s own direct-injection diesel.

The final major development was the LWB (long wheelbase) version from 1992, with a wheelbase extended by 20 cm and equipped with air suspension. The first generation continued to be produced alongside its successor, with the last model years sold under the name Classic. In total, some 317,615 examples of the first generation were produced.
