"English charm at its best. Overall in good usable condition and ready for the road."

Description

This car was first registered in Karlstad in 1960. The owner drove it for 30 years before it was taken over by his son, who used it for about 14 years. The second owner initially purchased the car through his company but later transferred it to himself as a private individual. The current owner bought the car in 2016 and has since used it while making certain improvements.

New battery, refurbished braking system, new slave and clutch cylinders, rebuilt carburettors, new door seals (rubber/fabric), new tyres (2016), and freshly painted wheels.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine runs smoothly, just as it should. All technical functions are in order except for the clock and the fuel gauge — the latter always reads full, most likely due to a faulty sender. Ten-year-old tyres with good tread. Two window winders are non-functional. Two sets of keys and working locks.

  • Interior condition:

Nice interior with attractively patinated seating surfaces, where the front section of the rear seat shows minor fading. Wood trim, door panels, and carpets are in good condition. Headlining is in good condition with a small blemish above the left rear door (see photo).

  • Exterior condition:

Engine, gearbox, and brakes function satisfactorily. The bodywork has some minor scratches and dents. Some bubbles are visible, likely originating from a previous partial repaint. Rust damage at the bottom of the left front wing (see photo). Nice bumpers, with the front one having a dent in the corner. The rest of the chrome is in good usable condition. Glass and lights in good usable condition.

  • General condition:

A pleasant and charming overall impression. Nice interior and with potential for exterior improvement.

Facts about the model

The Riley 4/68 was introduced in the autumn of 1959 as part of BMC’s new so-called “Farina” series, named after the Italian designer Pininfarina who was responsible for its styling. The model shared its basic underpinnings with the Austin A55 Mk II, Morris Oxford V and Wolseley 15/60, but featured a more exclusive appearance with Riley’s characteristic grille and more richly appointed interior details.

Under the bonnet sat BMC’s well-proven 1.5-litre B-series engine with twin SU carburettors, which gave it a livelier performance than its corporate siblings. A four-speed manual gearbox was standard, with overdrive available as an option.

The interior was quintessentially British, with a well-crafted wooden dashboard and high-quality upholstery. The Riley 4/68 was aimed at buyers seeking a mid-sized car that offered both comfort and a little more driving pleasure than average.

Production of the 4/68 continued until 1961, when it was replaced by the closely related 4/72, which featured a slightly larger engine and updated mechanicals.

A little over 14,000 examples of the Riley 4/68 were built, making it relatively rare today. The surviving cars are cherished by enthusiasts for their classic Pininfarina styling, well-mannered road manners, and unmistakable period British charm.
