"Here is a 1985 Volvo 240, in the Basic De Luxe trim. Does it get any more representative of the Swedish welfare state era? It boasts a straightforward and attractive blue paint, along with a cozy interior. Easy to drive, maintain, and take care of. Virtually everything is in an "untouched original condition," and all functions work well."

Description

Purchased in December 1984, this car found its way into the hands of a lady in Falun from November 1988. She owned it until September 2014, during which time the car had covered 8,971 miles. The current owner took over the car at that point, and now the odometer reads 9,243 miles. The vehicle has been primarily kept in the garage, taken on shorter enthusiast trips and attended Volvo gatherings.

As new, the car was equipped with a Volvo radio, engine heater, and tow hitch. Included with the car are two sets of keys, original documents, inspection records, and various receipts. Additionally, the car comes with original wheels, hubcaps, and older winter tires.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily and runs smoothly. Gear shifts, clutch, and brakes work just as well. The Volvo sensation is immediately present, and everything operates smoothly. There's a main power switch. While it hasn't been inspected on a lift, it has been rustproofed. These factors, along with low mileage and minimal wear, have earned praise from the vehicle inspection. The visible condition reinforces this. The car hasn't seen much use in recent years, so a thorough inspection and service could be beneficial.

  • Interior condition:

The overall impression is very positive. Both the front seats and the rear seat, along with the door panels, carpets, and headliner, are in excellent original condition. Seat covers have been on the front seats since the beginning. They seem to have affected the underside of the original upholstery slightly, but a reconditioning will do it good. Everything appears to be functioning well.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint appears to be original and still retains its glossy finish. There's a minor dent from a door impact and a slight discoloration on the right rear door, although the current owner hasn't applied any rubbing compound or similar treatments. The glass is clear, and the rubber trims are in excellent original condition, as are the door moldings and other aspects. The engine and trunk compartments are in very good condition. The wheels are in great shape and are of a newer type with older but well-preserved tires. Original wheels also come with the car.

  • General condition:

This is a fine example of a Volvo and an era. It's almost forty years old, yet it has gracefully weathered these years and proves that the motto "Volvo's values endure" holds true. Many Volvo models have become collector's items over the years. Initially, special editions and high-performance models tend to attract enthusiasts. Eventually, even the workhorses - the ones that did the job and were a common sight on the roads - gain appreciation. Suddenly, they're gone and missed. That's where most people's memories come from. Moreover, when it's a low-mileage car in this condition, it becomes a classic and a subject of motor and cultural historical significance.

Facts about the model

A classic icon deeply embedded in the Swedish psyche. Whether you've ridden home from the hospital as a newborn in a taxi, accompanied your parents to IKEA, or traveled to the countryside with your grandparents, most of us have a connection to these vehicles.

Over the years, a multitude of variants and updates were introduced. When the new 740 model arrived in 1984, some might have thought that the "old" 240 had run its course. However, Volvo stepped up and continued to develop the 240. Different engines were introduced, including gasoline, diesel, and turbocharged options. The car came in two, four, and five-door body styles, with various equipment levels offering both sportiness and flair. While there were more performance-oriented cars on the market, few could match the combination of simplicity, durability, quality, and safety found in the Volvo 240 – a down-to-earth family car.

For the 1985 model year, the DL version received a new engine, the B200K with 103 horsepower. It still featured a carburetor and choke. Otherwise, by that point, the DL model had become an entry-level version with relatively basic equipment, but it still performed its duties admirably.

In total, over 2.8 million units of the 240 model were manufactured between the model years 1975 and 1993. Even now, 30 years after production ceased, we can still see them on the roads daily.
