"A nice bus for next year's summer and camping season."

Description

This Kleinbus is sold new in Sweden and previously belonged to a teacher in automotive sheet metal from Örebro. At the school where he worked, the bus underwent sheet metal renovations. The current owner purchased the bus in 1995. It's in good condition with some paint peeling, please refer to the pictures. The bus is equipped for camping, with accompanying sofas that can be turned into beds, matching curtains, and more. The engine has been replaced; it now features a 1600cc engine with dual-port heads. It was originally delivered from the factory with a 1200cc engine. The bus is roadworthy but hasn't been used since 1996. Keys for the ignition are available, but keys for the doors are missing. The Volkswagen Type 1 came in various versions. In 1950, there were only the panel van and the kombi to choose from, but already in 1951, the Kleinbus was introduced. And eventually, the Pickup version came along.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine has been replaced from a 1200cc to a 1600cc. At the time of photography, the engine was started with external assistance, and it sounds as it should. The bus has a new ignition lock, but there remains some electrical issue between the ignition lock and the starter motor. Door keys are missing.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in a nice used condition with a camping setup that can be converted into a bed. The inner ceiling has come loose at some spots due to adhesive failure, as shown in the pictures. The curtains are sun-faded.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has a good older repaint with paint peeling in some areas, as shown in the pictures. The rearview mirror on the driver's side is broken.

  • General condition:

The Kleinbus is in an appealing condition but needs some care, a startup service, and a review of issues like the ignition lock/electrical problems. After an inspection, the bus will be ready for next year's summer adventures.

Facts about the model

The initiator behind the robust Volkswagen Type 2 was the Dutchman Ben Pon, who was also responsible for the VW agency in the Netherlands during the 1950s.

Production began in 1950, and the Type 2, which could carry 4.6 cubic meters of cargo, became a bestseller almost from day one. The first 50 units arrived in Sweden at the end of 1950. Two years later, the Pickup version with a 4.2 square meter bed was introduced, providing additional space underneath for more cargo.

Early on, a luxury version with a sunroof and windows along the roof edge and around the rear corners was introduced. Both as a luxury bus and a simpler Kleinbus, it began to gain popularity as a camping vehicle already in the 1950s.

The shape of the full-scale prototype from 1949 remained largely unchanged until 1967. In Brazil, they continued to produce them in this form until 1976.
