"This is a fine and pleasant carriage. There are vehicles in this class that have been restored to new and exhibition condition, hardly for practical use. Here, you get a well-maintained and gently used carriage with patina, but also in a charming 50-year-old condition that's been well-loved, much like a pair of well-worn Chelsea boots or a well-used suit from Savile Row – something you feel comfortable in."

Description

The car was originally sold in Texas and appeared to have one owner in Houston from 1973 to 1976. There are order papers, delivery documents, and delivery protocols confirming this. Afterward, there were two owners in Colorado from 1976 to 1987, and it seems to have a complete service history during this time. A little curiosity: there's a receipt for the purchase and installation of snow chains around the New Year of 1982/1983, done at the local Rolls-Royce workshop. The time in the USA is well-documented.

In June 1988, the car was registered in Sweden. It was probably around that time when the car was repainted to a solid black finish. The first owner in Sweden had the car for four years, and the second owner for 16 years. The current owner acquired the car in 2008. At that time, the hydraulic system and air conditioning were renovated. Ownership has been mostly trouble-free, with expected wear and maintenance. In 2022, the hydraulic system was pressure-tested, with documentation available. The car was last inspected in 2021. New tires were installed in 2021. The car has primarily been maintained and repaired by the owner himself. As he now hangs up the car gloves and keys, it's time for the next owner to take over. All documentation, stored in several binders, and a custom-fitted protective cover are included.

The current mileage is 22 186 miles, and the odometer has rolled over once, which means 122 186 miles (196 640 km).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily and runs smoothly and quietly. The ride is trouble-free and slightly floaty. Everything appears to work well, and the air conditioning cools effectively. The central locking system is a bit slow on some doors. All other electrical components work well. The car hasn't been inspected on a lift, but from what was visible, the undercarriage appears to be in good condition. There is some oil dampness in the engine compartment.

  • Interior condition:

The interior, including the seats, door panels, carpets, and headliner, is in a nicely aged condition. Additional wool mats and footrests in the rear add to the comfort. The wooden details are in a nicely weathered condition, although the wooden trim between the dashboard and windshield has significant cracking and paint peeling. The original Stereo 8 is functioning uncertainly, and there's a newer stereo (from the 80s) by Blaupunkt.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is glossy and nice, but there are minor scratches and cracking. Shiny surfaces, glass, rubber, and trims are also in good condition, but they show signs of 50 years of use. Wheels and hubcaps are also in good condition with some signs of use. Overall, the car is in a well-maintained used condition externally. The engine and luggage compartments are in a similar state, with both being in good but used condition.

  • General condition:

Hela vagnen uppvisar en likartad nivå, vilket är trevligt och skapar en härlig nostalgikänsla av en varsamt brukad 50-åring. I en tappning från Roll Royce med dess teknik, kvalitet och aura är det en verklig klassiker. Här tillbringar man gärna några timmar, medan landskapet utanför tyst passeras förbi. Möjligen skulle känslan förhöjas ändå ett par snäpp om det gick att få ut några toner ur Stereo-8.an, gärna Dimonds are forever med Shirley Bassey.

Facts about the model

The new Silver Shadow model from Rolls-Royce represented a significant modernization and departure from their previous carriages. It featured a self-supporting body, a considerable reduction in size, and incorporated modern technologies like front disc brakes, independent suspension, and automatic leveling through a hydraulic system licensed from Citroën. Essentially, Bentley's T-model was also manufactured using the same technology and design. The decision to make the cars smaller and incorporate more driver-assist technologies was partly driven by the fact that an increasing number of luxury car owners were driving their vehicles themselves rather than having private chauffeurs. Rolls-Royce needed to adapt to evolving societal trends and demands. This strategy turned out to be a success.

At its unveiling during the London Motor Show at Earls Court in the autumn of 1965, the Silver Shadow and Bentley T became major topics of discussion. The showrooms were crowded with intrigued onlookers. As sales picked up in the spring of 1966 and more motoring journalists and owners had the opportunity to drive the new vehicles, the response was overwhelmingly positive. While there were a few purists who thought the cars might not be grand enough, they were vastly outnumbered by the accolades.

Over time, there were upgrades and improvements made. Different body lengths were produced, along with open cars and coupe versions. However, due to the switch to self-supporting bodies, it became more challenging to produce special models by external firms, as had been the case before. A total of 41,513 vehicles based on the Silver Shadow platform were manufactured between 1965 and 1995.

In the Mark 1 models, certain changes were made, such as upgrading the gearbox to a more modern three-speed after a few years. For the 1969 model year, the front leveling system was removed to enhance road handling. Air conditioning became standard, and the cars were equipped with alternators. By 1969, a new instrument panel was introduced to meet safety requirements. To the disappointment of many, the picnic tables in the rear seat were also eliminated due to safety regulations. The engine capacity increased to the iconic 6.75 liters in 1970. Central locking and cruise control were introduced in 1973. In 1972, radial tires became standard, and so on! In 1977, the Mark II facelift arrived, but that's an entirely different story.
