Description

The car was registered on September 27, 1919, assigned the recognition mark "W417" for Kopparberg County (later Dalarna County), and this information was "notified to the superior authority" on October 20. The first owner was Albin Eriksson in Gårdvik in Svärdsjö parish north of Falun. The car was used by a couple of different owners in the county for ten years, and in June 1929, it was reported to the superior authority that "the car has been destroyed and will no longer be used. Certificate attached. Removed from the register." However, the car was not destroyed; it remained standing and was eventually acquired by Sparreholm's collections, where it also remained. In 2018, it was sold at auction to the current owner, who has a lot of experience with pre-war Chevrolet models. He took on the car and has done most of the renovation himself, aiming for a condition that reflects a lightly used and well-maintained automobile from that era. The result is a smart, presentable, and user-friendly piece from the car's early years. A few pictures show a list of all the work done on the car. A picture of a sister car with a slightly different recognition mark (registration number) also provides an intriguing insight into how automobiles were used at that time.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily, and the gears are operated with skill and feeling. The engine has a cylinder head from a few years later model, but it has been modified to resemble a 1919 model engine, with exposed valves and rocker arms without a valve cover.

  • Interior condition:

Everything is clean and tidy. The backseat's backrest is in original parchment, while the other cushions have been newly sewn in vinyl. The floor is made of a newer material with brass strips along the edges. The gauges and instrument panel are original.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint has a nice period-appropriate finish without being overly polished. It's equipped with new stylish wooden wheels from the USA, a cost of 35,000 SEK, painted and fitted with newly manufactured tires. Additionally, the convertible top has been newly sewn and is relatively easy to operate.

  • General condition:

A pre-war car in a beautifully restored condition, more prepared to be used for gatherings and events rather than being kept in a museum.

Facts about the model

The Model 490 was produced between 1915 and 1922, and its name was derived from its price, which was $490. Its competitor, the Model T Ford, was being sold at the same time for $495. The price remained steady for a couple of years, but by 1922, it was more expensive than its name suggested. However, the model name remained unchanged. The innovative overhead valve engine was unusual for its time, but Chevrolet's owner stuck with this design. The four-cylinder, 2.8-liter engine remained the base engine option until 1929, when the brand's first six-cylinder engine was introduced, and other car models were introduced as well.
