"There's something captivating about this type of object, its history, and how it has been used. It's almost like an art and cultural artifact just as it is."

Description

The current owner has possessed the motorcycle for ten years but hasn't ridden it; it has been started up though. Its history is not entirely clear. It was issued a newer registration number in 1996 and has had a few owners since then. There's an old registration plate from Örebro County at the front. Behind the plate, an old tax stamp from Degerfors and 1952 is found, indicating it likely spent some time there. It has a blank tank, which was typical for BSA export models, suggesting it might have had Swedish history from the beginning. More information can likely be obtained from the National Archives (Riksarkivet) and/or Örebro City Archives (Örebro Stadsarkiv).

It has acquired a few newer decals and comes with well-preserved vintage-style luggage bags.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Not started during inspection, requiring a check-up and assessment. It appears to be complete and was last running some time ago. It's a three-speed model with controls on the tank. There is a short video clip from that occasion.

  • Interior condition:

You sit on a "spring seat saddle" made by Terry, in a charmingly weathered condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Motorcykeln är snart hundra år och är i ett relativt orört men patinerat skick. Den har säkert blivit helt eller delvis ommålad genom åren. Den blanka tanken (export utförande) har någon bula. Hjul och däck i åkbart skick.

  • General condition:

Many signs indicate that it's possible to get this motorcycle in a roadworthy condition while preserving its almost-century-old patina. Naturally, one can also choose to undertake a restoration. Regardless of the ambition and choice, a BSA from the motorcycle's heyday between the two World Wars is always fascinating. If you can trace its origins back and establish that it was sold in Sweden and uncover its history, it truly becomes a subject of motor and cultural historical significance.

Facts about the model

According to information, Birmingham Small Arms, abbreviated as BSA, was founded by fourteen gunsmiths in 1861. The demand for firearms decreased after the Crimean War, leading them to explore new areas of production together. They started manufacturing bicycles in the 1880s and in 1903, they developed their first motorcycle prototype, with the first car being produced in 1907. By 1909, they offered a range of motorcycle models. The following year, they purchased Daimler Motor Company (England), which was facing financial difficulties.

During the interwar period and the 1930s, BSA emerged as a leader in the development of single-cylinder overhead valve engines. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, they successfully produced a 500cc engine capable of sustaining an average speed of 100 miles per hour. This achievement took place at the legendary Brooklands track, earning them the prestigious Gold Star award.

In the post-war era up until the late 1960s, BSA introduced numerous successful models across various sizes and classes. They also enjoyed success on the racing circuits. Toward the end of the 1960s and the early 1970s, they were affected by the "Japanese miracle," which often involved the imitation of motorcycles from countries like England. In 1973, along with their partner Triumph, they faced a critical crisis. This led to the decision to discontinue the BSA brand, while Triumph continued on a turbulent journey.
