"How many Taunus 17M P3s still retain their original tyres — and can actually be driven on them? This is a truly exceptional car!"

Description

An elderly couple in Kalmar purchased this Ford Taunus 17M new. They used it very little, and therefore the motor magazine publisher Albinsson & Sjöberg acquired it for their museum in Karlskroka in 2001. Despite being housed at the museum, it was taken out and driven every year to keep the car in working order. This is likely one of very few 17M of P3 generation that is in such an unrestored and simultaneously excellent condition – for example, the tyres are said to be original. The paint has, however, been retouched on both sides of the bodywork, and the upholstery has been re-stuffed and is in very good condition. The cylinder head is said to have been renovated by the previous owner, Albinsson & Sjöberg. The current owner purchased it in spring, so in total the Ford has had only three owners. The odometer reading of just under 17,000 km is backed up by what Albinsson & Sjöberg have stated about the car. An instruction book and the museum plaque from Karlskroka are included with the purchase. No service book is available and one set of keys is included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Despite having been on display at a museum for so many years, it is in excellent working order and pleasant to drive. This year, the car has been fitted with new fluids, hoses and new contact points. The engine and gearbox function well. No noises could be heard from the suspension or brakes during a test drive. Electrical functions such as headlights, fan, horn and windscreen wipers were tested and working at the time of documentation. The clock, however, does not appear to be functioning.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in good condition and the upholstery has been re-trimmed by a saddler. Door panels, rubber mats and headlining are in fine original condition. Everything is complete and clean!

  • Exterior condition

It is likely that this Ford has retained much of its original paint. However, there are repairs around the wheel arches where a colour difference can be seen. There are also stone chips and other minor damage to the paintwork. Grey spots are visible on the right rear fender and on the tailgate, which should not be impossible to carefully polish away. The original tyres still have tread, but naturally have age cracks and should therefore be replaced if the car is to be used.

  • General condition

Ford Taunus 17M was a very common car, but it disappeared as quickly as fashion shifts in the 1960s. Therefore, this low-mileage and largely untouched example is today a very rare car.

Facts about the model

During the 1960s, Ford was not a single car manufacturer but several, with German and English Ford having completely separate competing model programs – moreover, American Ford models were also sold in Sweden. The model name Taunus had been used by German Ford as early as the 1930s. Ford Taunus 17M was shown at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 1960. Ford called the design "Linie der Vernuft" – the line of reason, and behind the styling were Swedish-born Wesley Dahlberg and Uwe Bahnsen. The model quickly became a popular car in Sweden and sold better than any previous Ford model had done. It was available as a two- and four-door sedan as well as an estate car – Turnier was what Ford called it in their nomenclature. The three-speed manual gearbox fitted to the auction car was standard, while a four-speed was an optional extra. Model generations changed rapidly at Ford during the 1960s, and as early as 1965 the P3 was replaced by the new P5 generation. By then, 669,731 examples of the P3 had been built.
