Description

On March 25, 1982, the first and current owner ordered his Volvo from T Malmström Bil AB in Mellerud. The delivery took place on June 7, and since then, they have been inseparable companions. He has meticulously cared for his Volvo, following all the best practices. Naturally, everything is documented and collected in a binder, from the initial order and warranty certificate at purchase to the present day. As a knowledgeable and meticulous motor enthusiast and trained technician, he has handled maintenance, including oil changes, himself, and has carefully documented everything he has done. The car has been Tectyl treated, and he has been particularly diligent about rust protection, always addressing even the slightest hint of rust immediately, often as a preventive measure. He also added inner fenders in the rear wheel arches. For the last 25 years, the car has not been driven in winter; instead, it has been resting in a garage. Of course, notes about this are included in the binder. Apart from the first few years, all inspection reports are also included in the binder. He has digitized spare parts catalogs and all other documentation onto CD-ROM and USB drive, which are included, in addition to the physical binder and instruction manuals. Three sets of keys are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly once the choke has done its job. During a gentle test drive, the steering, brakes, clutch, and shifting were all found to function flawlessly. Regular oil changes, the most recent at 237,060 km, ensure clear and clean oil. A compression test conducted in May showed consistent readings of 12.5 across all cylinders. The overdrive was not tested but is reported to work as intended, as does everything else. The timing belt was last replaced at 187,300 km. Although not inspected on a lift, the underside appeared to be in good condition based on what could be seen. The vehicle inspection service has had no remarks, only praise.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in fine original condition with nice seats and backseat, as well as door panels, trim, and headliner. The backseat has hardly been used and shows no signs of spills or mess. The textile carpets are in great shape, protected by original molded plastic mats. The steering wheel, controls, and instrumentation are also in excellent condition. Everything appears to function well. There are headrests on all four seats. The rear shelf includes a sunshade for the rear window. The cassette radio has been removed for some time, the speakers remain but need a functional check.

  • Exterior condition:

The car features a fine original paint job in a solid medium red color with mild usage patina and touch-ups with rust protection on the edges. Glass, chrome, plastic, rubber, and lighting details are all in fine original condition. The wheels are in excellent shape, with shiny trim rings and hubcaps, and good Michelin tires. The engine and trunk compartments are also in fine original condition.

  • General condition:

This car has been driven and cared for by a single owner for 42 years. It is evident in its condition and feel that it has been a labor of love. This is a piece of Swedish cultural and automotive history, and now stands as a fine classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 240 model was introduced as an update to the 140 series in August 1974, designed by Jan Wilsgaard. This model is a classic icon in the Swedish cultural psyche. Whether taking a taxi home from the hospital, going with parents to IKEA, or traveling with grandparents to the countryside, almost everyone has some connection to these cars.

Over the years, numerous variants and updates were made. When the new 740 model was introduced in 1984, many thought the "old" 240 model had reached the end of its line, but Volvo shifted gears and continued to develop the 240.

Various engines were added over the years, including gasoline, diesel, and turbocharged versions. It was produced in two, four, and five-door body styles. There were different equipment variants, from sportier models to more luxurious ones, but perhaps the most genuine were the DL/GL models, a staple of the Swedish home.

Initially, the GL model was a bit more upscale but eventually became the entry-level model. From 1981, it was equipped with the B23A engine, producing 112 hp.

There were faster cars on the market, but few could match the combination of simplicity, durability, quality, and safety of the Volvo 240, a down-to-earth family car. In total, over 2.8 million Volvo 240s were built between 1974 and 1993, and now this people’s car and 50-year-old has become a collectible.
