Adler Trumpf Junior C 995 cc — 1937

An exceptionally rare car in Sweden. With its front-wheel-drive layout, it was well ahead of its time in the 1930s. An exciting restoration project, recently brought out after many years in storage.

"These cars are virtually never seen on Swedish roads. Considering that fewer than 30 examples remain in the Swedish Transport Agency’s vehicle register, that is hardly surprising.

Despite their simple construction, they were highly appreciated thanks to their front-wheel-drive layout, which made them particularly well suited to Swedish winter conditions.

The car has not been started for more than 20 years, so a considerable amount of work and inspection should be expected before it can be returned to the road. A good starting point would be to fit new tyres and then focus on the mechanical components.

It could also be well suited to a museum collection. In that case, fitting new tyres and giving the car a thorough clean and polish may be sufficient before adding it to an exhibition.

We cannot confirm this with complete certainty, but the car is most likely only pre-registered and will therefore need to undergo a final inspection before becoming exempt from further periodic inspections."

Description

What made the model revolutionary for its time was the combination of front-wheel drive and independent suspension on all four wheels. This gave the car excellent handling characteristics compared with the conventional rear-wheel-drive cars of the period, which typically featured rigid axles.

During 1938 and 1939, a number of Adler Trumpf Juniors were also assembled at Den Norske Automobilfabrikk in Kambo, near Moss. However, there is no documentation confirming that this particular example was one of the Norwegian-assembled cars.

The car has only been used on two or three occasions since 1987 and has remained untouched in indoor storage for at least 20 years. The rear seat is missing, and we have also been unable to locate a key or any hubcaps for the car. As far as we can determine, the car is otherwise complete.

Since being re-registered in 1987, the car has had two owners. The current owner has owned it since 1987. A copy of the older registration document is included, which may make it possible to carry out further research into the car’s history through the Swedish National Archives.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with an inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of just under 1 litre. According to available information, the engine produces 25 hp.

The car was reportedly last driven around 20 years ago and has since been stored indoors. No attempt has been made to start it ahead of the auction. The engine is not seized, and we have confirmed that it can be turned over by hand. One of the engine’s core plugs has been replaced with a hand-carved wooden plug; see photo.

The engine should be expected to require a thorough inspection and service before any attempt is made to start it. The car is equipped with a manual gearbox, but we do not know the current condition of any part of the drivetrain. It will also require a new 6-volt starter battery.

The car has mechanically operated cable brakes. The brakes are not binding, making the car easy to move and winch onto a vehicle transporter.

  • Interior condition

The seat upholstery and door cards have been retrimmed in furniture fabric, which was common when restoring 1930s cars in the early 1980s. The seats and door cards are in good condition.

The headlining is missing and, unfortunately, the rear seat disappeared without trace during the car’s long period in storage, when it was moved between different garages. The dashboard is in reasonably good condition. The floor carpet is missing, but the metal floor appears to be in very good condition.

The car has an ingenious starting mechanism. Pressing a foot pedal operates a cable connected to the starter motor, which then turns the engine over.

  • Exterior condition

An older repaint, probably carried out in the early 1980s. The car is affected by what is sometimes known as spray-filler blistering, with bubbles forming beneath the paint across large areas of the body. From a short distance, the car presents well, but the blistering becomes visible upon closer inspection.

The car has been stored indoors and protected from fading in the sun. We believe machine polishing would significantly improve the shine. The tyres are in poor condition with extensive dry cracking, although they still hold air.

The headlamp units have been replaced with later ones featuring Volvo lettering moulded into the glass. The original Pegamoid roof covering has also been replaced with a more modern artificial-leather/vinyl material. All of this work was carried out before 1987.

The body appears solid. The doors fit well. The chrome on the front bumper is peeling and shows surface rust, while the rear bumper could probably be polished to restore much of its shine.

  • General condition

A good project for anyone wishing to restore a very rare model. It requires mechanical attention as the first priority, followed by cosmetic refurbishment.

Facts about the model

The Adler Trumpf Junior 1G/E is a German-built pre-war car with front-wheel drive and a 995 cc engine producing approximately 25–30 hp. It was manufactured by Adlerwerke between 1934 and 1941.

The Trumpf Junior became Adler’s greatest commercial success, with more than 102,000 examples produced before production ended during the Second World War in 1941. The model was highly regarded in Sweden during the late 1930s for its reliability and its ability to cope with poor winter roads, thanks to its front-wheel-drive layout. According to Car.info, around 30 registered examples remain in Sweden today.
