SAAB 95L Herrgårdsvagn V4 — 1977

Antelope brown Saab 95 L station wagon. These practical Saab V4 wagons ceased production in 1978 and were a familiar sight on the roads well into the 1990s. They were practical, easy to load, and affordable. Just like most family wagons of that era, they are now virtually extinct. This particular example has been on display in a museum and needs to get back on the road.

"They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. In this case, we agree with that statement. A Saab wagon with potential. A general inspection, service, and brake check are recommended before inspection at the vehicle registration authority."

Description

Bilweb Auctions has been entrusted with selling the vehicles from the collection at Saab Memorial Hall, Sweden's most charming little Saab museum. It was started by Norwegian Tron Bach, who moved to Sweden in 2011. After a busy life as a hotel owner, Tron relocated to a small farm in Gullsjö, Vännäs. When he found a worn and dented Saab 92 behind a shed, the idea began to take shape. He decided to start a Saab museum to honor Saab's Swedish cultural heritage, a car admired worldwide. Over the years the museum has been open, more than 1,000 visitors have come to the small northern Swedish town’s Saab museum. Tron feels that, with age, it's time to close his museum on a high note.

The museum will close in time for the auction. Until then, we recommend a visit. For more information, see https://www.saabmemorialhall.info/.

At this auction, there are several cars we haven't been able to remove from the premises. To do this, one of the walls must be demolished. This will be done at the museum's closing so buyers can collect their cars. Please note that these vehicles have been off the road for a long time, which means they may require more work to get them into shape compared to similar models that have been continuously driven.

About the Car:

This is one of the last models of Saab's beloved 95 estate. When it was acquired for the museum in 2018, it was inspected and roadworthy. We thought it would be a tough nut to crack when we tried to start it after 6 years of standing idle. With the well-known technique among older car mechanics, "a splash in the carburetor," the engine started immediately. We were actually impressed by how easily it started. We were not able to conduct a more thorough test drive. We are content to note that it has potential for the right buyer. It is particularly nice that it is in such good condition inside, allowing the next owner to focus on technical inspection and exterior appearance.

The car was last inspected in 2018 and will need a new inspection before it can be used. With its seven seats (including the driver), this is a large little car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Engine: 1.5-liter V4 with a rated output of 65 hp. Four-speed steering column shifter with freewheel. The car has been stored inside the museum since 2018. Despite this, it started easily and was driven out for photography. We drove only a short distance, approximately 400 meters. During this brief drive, it performed well in both the engine and transmission, although the freewheel function was not tested. We have not tested all the car's technical features.

Note: The car is missing a starter battery.

  • Interior condition:

Interior: Very nice condition. We believe there may have been seat covers installed in the car previously, as otherwise, the interior would show more significant wear. The upper trim on the door panels is in poorer condition. Please refer to the pictures. Equipped with seat belts. Includes an extra seat at the back (though without seat belts).

  • Exterior condition:

This vehicle appears messier than it actually is. The unflattering brown color, which has been touched up in a non-professional manner, contributes to its overall appearance. There is surface rust and minor dents around the vehicle. Upon closer inspection, our assessment is that this 95 is a solid candidate for restoration or could serve well as a practical daily driver. Please refer to the pictures.

  • General condition:

Don’t let the stark color and worn appearance deceive you. In all its simplicity, it actually makes an impression. It can be used as is after a thorough check-up, or it provides a solid foundation for a complete restoration.

Facts about the model

The Saab 95, the station wagon version of the Saab 96, was designed by the renowned industrial designer Sixten Sason and manufactured by Saab from 1960 to 1978. In 1967, Saab transitioned from two-stroke engines to the V4 engine. In the later years, the station wagon was known as the 95 L V4, as the engine gained additional horsepower (68 hp) and saw various improvements. These later models are recognized by their thicker bumpers and represent the top model of the Saab 95 range. Well-maintained and fully functional Saab 95s are now rare, as they were heavily used due to their practicality and affordability.
