"A good restoration project. There are no significant rust issues, and it is drivable, but the paint is in poor condition, and the interior is damaged. The car is being sold without registration. The buyer will need to register the vehicle themselves. Relevant documents will be provided with the sale."

Description

This car has been owned for many years by a Volvo enthusiast (who owns several Volvo cars) in Long Beach, Southern California. It has been stored in a garage for the past ten years due to a battery charger, placed on the floor on the right front side, catching fire and damaging the interior. The seats, carpets, lower part of the passenger side of the dashboard, and headliner were affected by the fire. Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished. The car was then cleaned out and eventually sold in 2021 to a Swedish buyer who brought it to Sweden. The car has now been cleared through customs and started up, ready for an initial inspection and subsequent registration inspection. Before the inspection, a technical assessment is needed.

The engine starts and runs smoothly, but the fuel tank needs cleaning, and the clutch cylinder for disengagement is sticking. The brakes and gearbox are functioning properly. According to the previous owner, the engine was replaced with a refurbished B20E engine (without injection but with dual SU original carburetors) around 2010. After this, the car was hardly driven. The engine sounds really good during our testing. The body and undercarriage are exceptionally intact and rust-free (see pictures), making it an excellent restoration project. It could also be a suitable car for a rolling restoration after fitting a new interior. The seats are in good condition (taken from a 1971 P1800), but the door panels, carpets, headliner, dashboard padding, and rubber seals need to be renewed. These items are available at VP-Autoparts in Borås.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car is in a typical condition for a vehicle that has been unused for many years. The engine has been refurbished and starts and revs smoothly. However, it requires a technical inspection and both registration and control inspections. The exact mileage of the car is uncertain. The odometer reads 68,000 miles, which is approximately 100,000 kilometers, but it is likely that the odometer has gone around once, making it just over 200,000 kilometers. Unfortunately, there is no documentation available for verification.

  • Interior condition:

The interior has been damaged by fire, but the windows, instruments, and rear seat have remained intact. It requires a new interior and replacement of electrical cables under the passenger side of the dashboard. Unfortunately, the car is missing its keys, but it doesn't have a steering wheel lock and is equipped with a start button, so it can still be started without any issues.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has a solid body, but the paint is somewhat worn. There are touch-ups with gray primer in a few areas. The car has an older repaint in the typical light green color (091) that it has had since new. The undercarriage, floor, wheel arches, and other areas are entirely free from rust and damage. From what we have observed, the car has never been welded or involved in any traffic accidents.

Facts about the model

The Volvo P1800 is considered by many to be Volvo's most beautiful car. It was designed by Pelle Petterson in the late 1950s and was produced from 1961 to 1972. It was later replaced by the ES wagon model in 1972. Production ceased in 1973, primarily due to new safety regulations in the USA, which required thicker bumpers. Approximately 36,000 cars of the P1800 Coupe and ES models were built in total. The first two years of production, the cars were assembled in England, by Jensen. After that, production moved to Torslanda in Sweden.
