Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb FIA Historic Technical Passport — 1965

This car is a wonderfully enthusiastic and meticulously built example, exuding a strong factory-rally replica vibe with a fascinating historical background. It is a meticulously crafted replica of the car that German driver Eugen Böhringer drove to victory in the 3000-miles Liège-Sofia-Liège rally in 1965. The attention to detail and historical accuracy make this car stand out, and it carries a genuine sense of the rally heritage from that era.

Description

The story of this rally-hardened "Fen-Mercan" (a nickname for the Mercedes-Benz) begins as an ordinary, slightly luxurious big Mercedes in Norrland, probably in Umeå. An old registration certificate tells us that it stayed there until the early seventies. Fast forward to 2013 when the car stands as a build-ready, sandblasted, welded, painted, and roll cage-equipped body. The owner is returning from a historic Monte Carlo rally with his faithful MGA, accompanied by the old rally veteran Åke "Bryggarn" Andersson, who has driven in 11 real and some historic Monte Carlo rallies. The owner, Ingemar Bjerkborn, also has another M-B 220 SEb standing – a replica of Ewy Rosqvist's 220 SE that she drove in the Monte in 1963. He generously decides, together with his cousin and chief mechanic, Lars Bjerkeborn, to put the other 220 project (the auction car) on hold and complete the Rosqvist-Mercan for "Bryggarn."

"Bryggarn" expresses his gratitude for the trust by winning the mixed class in the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique 2014, together with Anna Sylwan (wife of Stig Blomqvist's legendary co-driver, Hans Sylwan), and it becomes Bryggarn's final major appearance in the rally scene. After that adventure, Bjerkborn and his right-hand man, Hans-Åke Nilsson, systematically and meticulously continue working on the auction car, and Bjerkborn enlists Annie Seel for the co-driver seat. Unfortunately, after a back operation, competing hours in a rally car are no longer feasible for the owner, and as a result, a particularly fine M-B 220 SEb rally car with HTP papers is now seeking a new owner.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The small straight-six engine has been renovated and optimized according to the regulations, and the fine older fuel injection system has been complemented with a more efficient fuel pump and higher fuel pressure to ensure the engine can deliver the right power in the right way. Below are more facts about the machine under "Owner's comments."

  • Interior condition:

The interior is tastefully designed, combining a beautiful concept with the functional and necessary equipment required for a newly built historically classified competition car. For example, there's new walnut veneer with an original feel, and in addition, a central control console is added, featuring modern alcantara material on top of the instrument panel. The stylish Nardi wood steering wheel is replaced with a racing-inspired suede steering wheel when it's time for competition. Below are all the interior equipment details listed under "Owner's comments."

  • Exterior condition:

Painted in the classic Mercedes color Hellblau (light blue) with a white roof. Genuine leather straps secure the engine hood and rear hatch. Furthermore, all side windows have been replaced with plexiglass, and of course, classic auxiliary lights are cleverly secured with stainless steel turnbuckles of marine origin. Below are all the exterior equipment details listed under "Owner's comments."

  • General condition:

A uncompromising and enthusiastically executed restoration/build, ready for an active life at events, tracks, and, of course, in rally forests.

Facts about the model

It's a powerful car to steer around the rally roads, and the question lingers about why Mercedes chose to compete with its S-class. Perhaps it's because it's big and strong? And has a robust construction? Successful it was regardless, and continues to be so today in the historical rally scene.
