"A usable PV with potential. With some minor work, it can be driven as-is, or alternatively restored to a finer condition."

Description

A car with an unknown history. It appears to have had four previous owners and is now being sold on behalf of an estate. To make it roadworthy, work is primarily needed on the brakes, which are uneven. Documentation is limited, with only an owner’s manual available. No spare wheel or jack included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine starts easily, and a test drive confirms that the gearbox functions satisfactorily. As previously mentioned, the brakes pull unevenly. A new fuel tank has been installed recently. The heater fan appears to have stopped working. The instruments seem to function as they should. The car sits on older tires mounted on steel wheels, with some hubcaps missing.

  • Interior condition

Complete but dirty upholstery. In our assessment, it should clean up well. A small tear at the lower part of the driver’s seat backrest (see image). The fabric trim along the doors is in poor condition. Door panels and headliner are in usable condition. The rubber mat remains only on the driver’s side.

  • Exterior condition

The car appears to have been repainted, likely during the 1990s when spray filler was commonly used—a method that has proven less successful over time. This is evident in small bubbles visible around the car. The chrome is in decent condition, though with minor rust pitting. Trim and glass surfaces are in acceptable, usable condition.

  • General condition

The overall impression is best described as a well-used car. There are quite a few things to address, without suggesting that the car is in poor condition.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 444 is a classic car model introduced by the Swedish automaker Volvo in 1944 and produced until 1965. It was Volvo’s first true passenger car and quickly became a symbol of the Swedish automotive industry.
The Volvo 444 was designed by Swedish engineer Gunnar Engellau and featured a modern, streamlined body for its time. It was equipped with a four-cylinder engine and offered a combination of style and functionality, making it popular among both families and businesses.
During its production run, more than 200,000 units of the Volvo 444 were manufactured. The car became known for its durability and reliability, which made it a popular choice both in Sweden and internationally. It was also widely used by municipalities and government agencies as a service vehicle.
The Volvo 444 holds strong cultural significance in Sweden and is regarded as one of the classic cars of the country’s automotive heritage. It was part of everyday life for many Swedes and helped shape Volvo’s reputation as a manufacturer of safe and dependable vehicles.
The 444 was followed by the Volvo 445 (an estate version) and later models such as the Volvo Amazon. Today, the Volvo 444 is a sought-after collector’s car and a symbolic example of Swedish engineering and automotive culture.
