"Fully functional nostalgic rally car. We are not aware of anything that requires immediate attention. It has some exterior blemishes, as most rally cars do, but nothing beyond what is to be expected. We believe the prospective buyer will appreciate the car for its history and usability. We have not had the opportunity to thoroughly review the regulations regarding Appendix K or whether anything may need to be updated on the car before it is used in competitions. This is the responsibility of the buyer to investigate."

Description

The vehicle was manufactured in 1970 and began its life as a standard road car. In 1989, it was converted into a competition car for Group H. Since then, it has built up a long history as a race car, and over the years it has been updated. Eleven years ago, it was approved under Appendix K. It has competed in the Midnight Sun Rally in 2009, 2022, and 2023. In 2023, it was updated with improved seats, and the engine, carburetors, and rear axle were overhauled.

The most recent service was carried out in 2025, when engine oil and filters were replaced, and new brake pads were installed with the braking system lubricated. The car is currently fully functional and ready for new challenges.

The most recent approved inspection by the Swedish vehicle inspection authority was carried out in 2003. Normally, classic vehicles are exempt from inspection once they reach 50 years of age. We do not believe this necessarily applies to rally cars, but we cannot say for certain. It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine what type of inspection and competition license is required to use the car on public roads and in rally competitions. In case of uncertainty, we recommend contacting the Swedish Motorsport Federation. Please review the photographed Appendix K documents carefully for more information.

The current owner purchased the car in 2025 with the intention of resuming his rally career. He has previously competed in the Midnight Sun Rally with another car, where he won his class. However, his business commitments have taken up too much time, and he has not had the opportunity to use the car. Therefore, he is now passing it on to the next rally enthusiast.

The car comes with two additional sets of wheels: one set of gravel tires on ATS rims and one set of studded ice tires on ATS rims. A total of eight complete wheels are included. See photos.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with a B20 engine with dual carburetors and a four-speed gearbox. We do not know exactly what modifications, if any, have been made to the engine in terms of tuning. As this is an Appendix K rally car, there are strict regulations governing the extent of technical modifications. We noted that the engine seemed to perform best at the higher end of the rev range.

During a short test drive on public roads, everything felt solid and well-functioning, including the steering, clutch, gearbox, handling, brakes, etc.

  • Interior condition

Strictly business. Lacks any form of sound-deadening material. Equipped for rally use with a roll cage, rally seats, and harnesses. All equipment is adapted for competition use. See photos.

  • Exterior condition

There are blemishes, as expected on a rally car with competition history. Scratches, a few minor dents, and some cracks in the paintwork are present, but nothing beyond what is typical for a rally car. The exterior gives a good overall impression.
Plastic windows in the doors, sides, and rear. ATS wheels fitted with good tires. What could be seen of the underside without lifting the car also appeared to be in good condition. See photos.

  • General condition

This is what a Volvo rally car looked like in the early 1970s. A true trip down memory lane—about as close as you can get to the feel, smell, and sound of rallying from that era. Moreover, it can still be competed with in historic events today.

THE VEHICLE IS APPROVED PURSUANT TO CHAPTER 42, SECTIONS 1–36 OF VVFS 2003:22 REGARDING CARS AND TRAILERS TOWED BY CARS. Facts about the model

Appendix K is an international competition class for historic cars, both two- and four-wheel drive. In Sweden, eligible cars must have been manufactured no later than 1990. The class is divided into several subcategories depending on engine displacement and period.

The cars must comply with FIA regulations, which are based on the rules in place at the time the cars originally competed. However, certain aspects have been modernized—most notably safety regulations, which are largely aligned with those of other national classes.

It is Appendix K-homologated cars that compete in the popular Midnight Sun Rally. Common cars in Appendix K include the Ford Escort, SAAB V4, Volvo PV and Amazon, Opel Ascona A/B, Volvo 140, Audi Quattro, among others.

(In 2024, it was announced that the FIA planned to introduce a new historic racing class covering model years 1991 to 2000, expected to come into effect from 2026.)
