"The car was restored over a period of three years, starting from a condition that required a great deal of work. Naturally, it was the car’s low production number that made it historically significant and worth the effort. Today, it stands as a showpiece worthy of any car collection."

Description

This car has undergone a complete restoration and is being sold on behalf of an estate. We have been in contact with the previous owner who carried out the restoration. He shared that the starting point was a vehicle in poor condition and that the restoration took him three years of dedicated work. Among other things, he had the entire floor remanufactured based on original drawings. Some parts were also sourced from a donor car.

For the interior fabric, he commissioned a weaving mill to reproduce the material based on an unbleached sample from the original upholstery. The minimum order the mill accepted was enough fabric for ten vehicles—so he simply had to go with it. The interior was then sewn by the restorer himself, who in the process also learned the craft.

The restoration was completed in 2014, and the car was re-registered in the vehicle registry that same year. In 2016, it was sold to its now-deceased owner. According to the family, the car has been driven very sparingly since then and has mostly been stored in the garage.

The instruction manual and spare wheel are missing. A classic Saab picnic blanket is included.

This is a remote auction. All photos and information about the car and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has not inspected the car on site.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Inline two-cylinder two-stroke engine with Solex carburetor. Displacement: 764 cm³. Stated output: 25 hp. The engine is transversely mounted and paired with a three-speed gearbox, front-wheel drive, and a freewheel function. The electrical system is 6 volts. The engine is of the correct type, though not the original one fitted in the car from factory.

The engine has been fully rebuilt with a bored block, new pistons, balanced crankshaft, etc. The gearbox was disassembled and measured; as no faults were found, it was reassembled without needing a full rebuild.

  • Interior condition:

Fully restored interior. The fabric was specially manufactured by a weaving mill to match the original design. The car features the distinctive instrumentation found in the early 92A models. The floor mat is made from a ribbed rubber material similar to the original. An additional temperature gauge has been mounted underneath the dashboard—see photos.

  • Exterior condition:

Very nicely restored condition. The bumpers and grille bars were re-chromed during the restoration. There is a scratch in the paint on the rear panel, just below the fuel cap—see photo. Newly manufactured BF Goodrich diagonal tires, correct in appearance, were fitted during the 2014 restoration.

  • General condition:

Fully restored to a very fine condition. Perfect for a museum or a private collection.

Facts about the model

Saab 92 – the name was a logical continuation of Saab’s earlier aircraft projects, the Scandia 90 and the Safir 91. A total of 20,128 Saab 92s were produced, of which 5,300 belonged to the initial A-series. The first model year ended with 1,246 cars built.

On December 12, 1949, series production of the Saab 92 began. On Monday, January 16, 1950, the first three production cars were delivered. Around the same time that the first cars began rolling off the assembly line in Trollhättan, the last propeller-driven fighter aircraft of the Saab 21 type was also completed at the same facility. These early Saabs clearly carried the DNA of aviation.

As Saab was originally an aircraft manufacturer, both engineers and ideas were drawn from the aviation side when car production began. With good aerodynamics, there was no need for a large and heavy engine with high horsepower—a small and lightweight engine was sufficient to achieve good driving characteristics, sometimes even better. This concept proved successful and, with some modernization, lasted all the way to 1980.

The chief engineer and driving force behind the project was Gunnar Ljungström. The design was the work of Sixten Sason, who also has an impressive portfolio of other successful designs.
