"Easy-to-drive classic car that keeps up with modern traffic at 90 km/h without trouble. Probably needs a carburetor check-up as the idle is a bit uneven."

"Easy-to-drive classic car that keeps up with modern traffic at 90 km/h without trouble. Probably needs a carburetor check-up as the idle is a bit uneven."

Description

The car was originally sold in November 1984 by Axel Davidson Bil AB in Växjö. The first owner was a woman in her twenties. According to accompanying records from the Swedish National Archives, the car was usually taken off the road during the winter months — which may explain its excellent condition.

It has had a total of eight owners since new, including the current owner who purchased the car in 2013. He initially intended to use it as a second car, but was so impressed by its condition that he decided to preserve it instead — and ended up buying another daily driver.

The current owner managed to find a NOS (New Old Stock) tow bar, which was retrofitted to the car, as it originally had none. The tow bar is approved for 750 kg.

The car is tax-exempt and has a valid inspection certificate (Bilprovningen) until the end of August 2025. Several older inspection reports are included, as well as the original owner’s manual and service notes. See photos for a selection of documents. The jack, spare wheel, and warning triangle are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Four-cylinder inline engine, 1.4 liters, equipped with a twin-choke Weber carburetor and rated at 61 hp. Five-speed manual transmission. Starts easily and runs smoothly at cruising speeds. At idle and lower revs, the engine runs a bit unevenly — see video. We recommend a general service and carburetor check, as the car has seen very limited use in recent years.

  • Interior condition:

Clean and tidy interior. The only flaw is a small wear mark on the driver’s seat — see photos. The luggage compartment is well-kept and in great condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice paintwork and well-maintained exterior. Fitted with Alpine aluminum accessory wheels in good condition. On the right side, the door and rear quarter panel have some slight waviness — see photos and video. We believe a previous owner may have gotten a bit too close to a garage door or similar, causing a minor dent. It’s not immediately noticeable at first glance, but fixing it would further elevate the car’s overall condition. Undercarriage is in good shape.

  • General condition:

Future collector’s car in unusually good condition.

Facts about the model

The original Renault 5 was produced between 1972 and 1996 across two different generations. It was introduced as a 1972 model and launched as a three-door compact car. The engine, transmission, and much of the mechanical setup were inherited from its predecessor, the Renault 4. To improve interior space, the spare wheel was mounted under the hood, where there was ample room above and beside the longitudinally mounted engine.

In North America, the Renault 5 was sold by American Motors Corporation under the name Le Car from 1976 to 1984.

(At the Geneva Motor Show in 2024, Renault unveiled the all-electric Renault 5 E-Tech Electric — but that’s a whole different story.)
