"Luxurious Volvo in very good condition. Has only traveled 158 770 kilometers since new."

Description

This Volvo 164 automatic from 1970 was purchased by the current owner in 1998 from a family in the Stockholm area. The first owner was the father, and later the son. The car had previously been stored under a cover with elastic bands attached to the car's edges, causing the paint to be worn off at all four corners of the roof. Over the years, the Volvo's paint had become dull, and a difference in color could be seen due to the wear of the cover. It was decided that the Volvo needed repainting. In connection with this, the right fender edge was repaired due to an old injury. Then the car was taken to a paint shop for a full repaint in the car's original color (wine red). The Volvo had a solid and nice undercarriage and had been well protected against rust over the years. It had regularly undergone rust protection treatment. It was inspected in July 1998 and had then traveled 155,850 kilometers. It was then stored away in a barn for many years but has been started up every summer. The latest inspection was carried out on April 30, 2022, without any remarks and was praised for its condition, the odometer now reads 158,785 kilometers. The car has traveled about 3000 kilometers in the last 26 years. The reason for this sparse driving is that the owner has several cars to drive and maintain.

Facts about the model

As early as the beginning of the 1960s, Volvo decided to develop a six-cylinder, more luxurious version of the upcoming 140 series – to attract premium customers back from Mercedes-Benz. In the fall of 1968, the 164 was introduced – with the body from the 140 series and the nose from Project 358, a previously abandoned project where a V8 was envisioned. With ten centimeters longer front, there was plenty of space for the new straight-six engine B30 with 130 hp DIN. In practice, it was an elongated B20 with the same cylinder dimensions as the regular four-cylinder. The gearbox from ZF was available with and without overdrive, and for those who wished, an automatic transmission could also be ordered for their 164.

The interior was significantly more luxurious than in the 140 series, and in the fall of 1969, the 164 received leather as standard, as well as headrests. At the same time, the car also received air vents with backflow valve, two halogen lights on each side of the grille. The following year, power steering became standard, and like in the 140 series, the wheelbase increased by two centimeters.

In the fall of 1971, when it was time to release the 1972 model year, the B30E with fuel injection became available as an option. Also new were ventilated disc brakes at the front. Otherwise, the news was the same as on the 140: the recessed door handles and a modernized dashboard.

To make room for the robust bumpers that came in the fall of 1972, modifications were made to the grille, and simultaneously, the 164 received a new dashboard, rear lights, and improved side impact protection. In anticipation of 1974, even stronger bumpers were introduced, and at the same time, the ventilation windows in the doors disappeared.

The 1975 model year was the last for the 164, and Volvo could sum up sales to 153,023 units.
