Description
The auction was a special event dedicated to particularly well-preserved Volvo cars—and “well-preserved” is exactly the right word for this Volvo 480. The current owner has only managed to drive about 1,200 km since acquiring it. He has now lost his garage space and is therefore passing the car on to the next enthusiast.
The car has just passed inspection and is approved until May 31, 2028. Included with the car are service records, the owner’s manual, a number of inspection reports, and two sets of keys. In the trunk, everything is in place, including the spare wheel, jack, and original tool kit.
The timing belt needs to be replaced due to age; it was last changed in 2002, and the car has only covered approximately 7,000 km since then.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
Equipped with a 1.7-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 109 hp, manufactured by Renault. Front-wheel drive with a transversely mounted engine and a five-speed gearbox. Starts easily and runs well on the road. All electrical functions are working.
-
Interior condition
A nice interior with only minor wear. There is slight wear on the driver’s seat backrest. There is also a very small tear in the fabric near the seatbelt mounting on the front left seat, as well as a slightly frayed seatbelt in the right rear. Photos of these details are available.
The headliner needs to be reattached, as it is sagging. Fortunately, it can be removed through the tailgate during the repair, which makes the job a bit easier. -
Exterior condition
Nice paint in normal condition considering its age and mileage. On the right front fender, there is a small area of surface rust/rust bubbling along the edge. There is also a stone chip with some light surface rust on the left rear fender edge, as well as a small paint chip on the right door.
These are not major or prominent issues—rather, it’s unusually few remarks overall. See photos. -
General condition
A fine example of the model with relatively low mileage, few owners, and a well-documented, well-maintained history.

Facts about the model
The 480 was developed on a new platform that would form the basis for Volvo’s first front-wheel-drive models in the 400 and 800 series. To some extent, the 480 was used to test how newly developed technical solutions worked before full-scale production of the 440 and 460 began. Combined with the fact that the 480 featured more electronic systems, this meant it suffered from more early “teething problems” than the 440 and 460 models.
The design was very different from previous Volvo models. The Volvo 480 was aimed at the U.S. market. It was decided that the car should have a low, sporty front, and to meet U.S. regulations regarding headlight height above the ground, pop-up headlights were chosen, folding up from the hood. During daytime driving, daytime running lights were used in countries where lighting was required by law.
The front grille was positioned below the bumper but still featured the diagonal Volvo slash that all Volvo cars had at the time. The 480 also inherited a number of characteristic features from the classic P1800 ES, such as the glass tailgate and the two-seat rear layout.
