"A prestige car with the star on the front, featuring restrained equipment. It has metallic paint and alloy wheels, and of course a smoothly shifting automatic transmission handles the gear changes. The sunroof opens electrically, and the passenger-side mirror is electrically adjusted by the driver, but otherwise it remains a well-functioning standard specification.

Everything, however, is built with quality to ensure long-lasting, trouble-free operation. After nearly 40 years, with low mileage and few owners, this car still performs flawlessly as intended—and will continue to do so for many years to come."

Description

This car was purchased by its first owner directly from Germany and registered for road use here on November 16, 1988. After a few quick ownership changes in the late 1980s, it was owned by a farmer outside Enköping for 29 years and driven very sparingly, as he had other vehicles for daily use.

The current owner, a Mercedes enthusiast, acquired the car in October 2019 and has driven approximately 4,500 km with it. He has had it serviced twice, including changes of fluids, filters, spark plugs, and more. He has also replaced a fuel hose.

Included with the car are the owner’s manual, two sets of keys, and inspection records verifying the mileage. Unfortunately, the service book has been lost due to an oversight at a workshop, but various receipts are available.

The car is inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily and the engine runs smoothly and quietly. During short test drives on smaller country roads and in suburban environments, everything feels stable and comfortable. Steering, gear changes with functioning kickdown, brakes, and road holding all perform without drama. This is a car that offers a safe and confident driving experience.

Not inspected on a lift, but what could be seen appeared to be in good condition.

  • Interior condition

Classic Mercedes-quality textile upholstery. The seats and rear bench are comfortable, and the fabrics appear unworn and fresh. The door panels, trim, headliner, and carpets are all in fine condition. The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are likewise well preserved.

The wood trim is in very good shape, and all instruments and electrical functions operate flawlessly. A newer stereo has been installed. Mercedes protective floor mats in rubber/plastic are fitted. The sunroof, with both tilt and slide functions, works well and adds to the pleasant cabin environment.

  • Exterior condition

Nice and glossy original paintwork with normal light wear considering its age and mileage. The right rear fender was repainted a few years ago following minor damage.

Attractive alloy wheels are fitted with newer Kumho tires. The engine bay and trunk are in very good condition, and the sound insulation under the hood is well preserved.

  • General condition

The star on the front, the model itself, its history, and its condition all confirm that this is a fine and interesting classic and enthusiast car. It is not a sports car, nor is it an extravagantly luxurious vehicle with costly ownership—it is a pleasant and comfortable car that will perform well and offer its owner value in many ways, not least through a sense of security and peace of mind.

Facts about the model

When it was time for a successor to the W123 model, Mercedes broke with tradition. Instead of building directly on its predecessor, the new W124 drew heavily on the technology and design of the smaller and more modern 190 model—albeit with a larger body and more spacious interior.

The body was offered in several versions: a four-door sedan, a five-door estate, and a six-door limousine. In addition, there were two-door coupé and cabriolet variants. Engine options ranged from four-cylinder carbureted units producing 109 hp to fuel-injected V8s with up to 381 hp.

In the standard sedan range, the 230E was an affordable option, featuring fuel injection and 136 hp. It offered Mercedes status and quality with a touch of luxury at a reasonable price point.

A mild update, Series II, was introduced from 1989, including features such as wider protective side moldings. From 1993, a further update—Series III—brought new model designations along with revised bumpers, lights, and grille.

Production of the W124 ran from 1984 to 1997, with a total of 2,583,470 units built.
