"A 1980s classic in well-maintained and good, usable condition that functions well mechanically."

Description

The current owner grew up with an Audi 100 in the family, and it’s a model he has strong memories of. In 2012, he bought this particular example on impulse, but soon sold it again. Less than two years later, he repurchased the car and addressed the issues noted during inspection—rusty brake lines and corrosion in the front subframe. Since then, he has taken care of it and used it during the summer months.

The Audi was featured in a six-page article in Klassiker magazine (issue 10/2023). The most recent work carried out is the replacement of the right wheel bearing by a workshop.

The car was originally sold new in Sweden, and the odometer currently reads 168,600 km. It is inspected and approved until July 2027. Included in the sale is a well-filled binder containing workshop receipts and inspection reports dating back to the 1980s. The owner’s manual and service book are present, although the latter is not fully completed; however, the records are supplemented by the receipts in the binder.

The original spare wheel and jack are included, though there is no tool kit. Two sets of keys are provided.

The Audi presents very well overall, and the interior is in excellent condition. With its fully galvanized body, it is well protected against rust, but minor corrosion can still occur where damage has been present. The photos show a couple of small rust spots on the body, and some surface rust is visible on the black lower sections of the body sides. For those who wish, it should be easy to sand down and repaint these areas in matte black. A machine polish of the paintwork would further enhance its appearance.

Mechanically, the car functions well and should be ready to drive and enjoy as is.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts and runs well, with both engine and gearbox in good working order. The brakes performed well during the test drive, and no faults were detected in the suspension or wheel assemblies. Electrical functions such as the fan, radio, and windshield wipers were also tested and are in working condition.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in very good condition. The light-colored upholstery is intact and appears clean. The dashboard, door panels, and headliner are all in good shape. The numbers on the gear knob are somewhat hard to read due to wear in the plastic. There is a small tear next to the sunroof crank, and one of the retaining clips for the passenger-side sun visor is missing.

  • Exterior condition

The Audi presents a good overall impression. Surface rust is frequently present in the matte black sections along the lower body sides. There is a rust spot just behind the left rear wheel, as well as a couple of additional small rust blemishes on the body—see photos.

There are also some minor parking dents, including a longer mark on the right rear door—refer to the photo documentation. The mounted summer tires have good tread depth but are marked as manufactured in 2004.

  • General condition

A tidy and well-functioning modern classic with a bright future as an enthusiast car. This was once a very common model in both Sweden and across Europe, but today it is quite rare—especially estate versions in such good condition.

Facts about the model

The Audi 100 was named Car of the Year in 1983, and in hindsight it stands out as one of the years when the award truly went to the right car. The third-generation Audi 100, known as the C3, was perfectly in tune with its time, featuring a body designed to achieve as low aerodynamic drag as possible in order to save fuel. The drag coefficient was a low 0.30 Cd, achieved not only through the car’s wedge-shaped design and sharply truncated rear end, but also thanks to a windshield and rear window that were bonded directly to the body without trim. No unnecessary rubber moldings protruded from the body, the wheel sides were smooth, and even the underbody was made as streamlined as possible. The result was not only low fuel consumption, but also a high top speed and low cabin noise levels.

At the beginning of the 1980s, Audi was still a relatively small brand in Sweden, but its rally success brought significant attention. In 1982, Stig Blomquist became Swedish rally champion, including a victory in the Swedish Rally driving an Audi Quattro. However, that model was a niche product compared to the Audi 100, which now entered the company car market in Sweden.

The base model, simply called the 100, had a four-cylinder engine, while the CC and CS models were equipped with five-cylinder engines. The estate version, Avant, was introduced in the autumn of 1983. By the 1985 model year, the entire Audi range was available with quattro all-wheel drive. The following year, the Audi 100 received fully galvanized bodies, providing excellent corrosion protection. The final Audi 100 C3 models were produced in November 1993. In Sweden, a total of 55,000 units were sold. However, the model continued to be produced in China under the FAW and Hongqi brands, where it appeared in some rather unlikely versions that didn’t quite suit the body shape—including a pickup variant. Production in China continued until 2005.
