"Uncommon English car in great condition; it runs well and makes a very good impression both inside and out."

Description

This particular car was sold new in Gothenburg and registered in 1949. It was driven until 1966, when a man from Linneryd bought it with the intention of restoring it. The car was dismantled but remained untouched until 1997, when he passed away.

It was then purchased by a man from Älmhult, who carried out the restoration, and the car was roadworthy by 2005. Since then, it has been actively used during the summer for events and holiday trips, including travels to England. Following the man's passing last autumn, his widow has decided to sell it on to a new, enthusiastic owner.

Facts about the model

Lea-Francis was a British car brand rooted in Coventry, England. The company was founded in 1895 by Richard Henry Lea and Graham Inglesby Francis. Like many other manufacturers of the time, they began with bicycles, before moving on to motorcycles and later cars.

The First Cars (1910s)
The first car to bear the Lea-Francis name was produced in 1911. Early models were small and technically quite simple, but they were of high quality and quickly became popular among those who could afford them.

The 1920s and '30s – The Golden Age
During the 1920s, Lea-Francis began producing sportier cars and gained a reputation as a manufacturer of technically advanced vehicles. They were among the first to use overhead camshaft (OHC) engines – a rarity at the time.

They also enjoyed success in motorsport. In 1928, a Lea-Francis car won its class in the prestigious 24-hour race at Le Mans, boosting the company’s status as a sports car manufacturer.

Postwar Era (1945–1960)
After World War II, Lea-Francis resumed car production with models like the 14HP and 2½-litre Sports. These were luxurious, hand-built cars – but expensive. They couldn’t quite compete with cheaper, mass-produced brands like Austin or Morris.

Production eventually ceased around 1960, as the company failed to adapt to the changing car market.

Attempts at Revival
In the 1990s, an attempt was made to revive the brand. In 1998, a concept car – the Lea-Francis 30/230, a retro-inspired roadster – was unveiled. However, the project never went into production.

What Makes Lea-Francis Special?

One of the first to use overhead camshaft in production cars.

Known for sporty and technically advanced vehicles in the 1920s and '30s.

Successful participation in Le Mans.

Extremely low production numbers – now highly rare collector’s items.
