"A survivor that's knocking on Saint Peter's door."

Description

The previous owner of this CX must have been very pleased with it, as he kept the car for almost 34 years before the current owner took it over just over nine years ago. The plan was to use it as a static display piece, so little attention was given to the interior and mechanicals.

As an early CX, it lacks power steering — unlike most later models — which gives a more direct and old-school driving feel. It’s also fitted with a tow bar approved for 1,500 kg.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine turns over and starts with the help of starter fluid but doesn’t run smoothly. Brakes and suspension have not been checked and likely require service or repairs. A full inspection is needed to assess the current condition and determine the technical state, which we were unable to do since the engine only ran briefly on starter fluid.

  • Interior condition:

Very worn and damaged. See photos.

  • Exterior condition:

Filled and quickly repainted many years ago. Dent on the left front wing — otherwise, see photos.

  • General condition:

With great enthusiasm and plenty of time, this car could be saved for future generations. In the worst case, it could serve as a parts donor.

Facts about the model

The Citroën CX was produced between 1974 and 1991 in a wide range of trim levels and engine configurations. During its development, aerodynamic efficiency played a key role—so much so that the model was named after the French abbreviation for drag coefficient: “coefficient ('C') X-axis.”

All engines were four-cylinder, ranging from 2.0-liter petrol units to 2.5-liter turbocharged and diesel variants. In between, there were also 2.2- and 2.4-liter engines with either carburettors or fuel injection. Buyers could choose between 4- or 5-speed manual transmissions or a 3-speed automatic. There was also a semi-automatic gearbox known as the C-matic.

Body styles were primarily four-door saloons, but there was also an extended-wheelbase version called Prestige. Large five-door estate models were available in various equipment levels, with some built for specific purposes such as ambulances or other professional use. A handful of six-wheeled CX estates were also produced, equipped with twin rear axles. These were used by, among others, SAS Cargo for fast freight deliveries when air transport wasn’t an option. The six-wheel versions also served as mobile platforms for film and still photography.
