Audi 100 1,8 — 1987

The Audi 100 C3 was deservedly named Car of the Year upon its debut in 1983. This particular example from 1987 is in exceptionally well-maintained condition and still presents a remarkably modern appearance.

"A best-selling model in its day, and now a rare find in this fine condition as a classic car. Inspected and ready to hit the road for this summer’s car meets."

Description

This is the third generation of Audi’s large sedan model, following the original release in 1968. Accordingly, this generation is known as the C3 and was introduced in 1982. The vehicle in question was sold new in 1987 by the VAG dealer Skellefteå Bilaktiebolag and has remained in northern Sweden ever since—something that’s clearly reflected in its well-preserved condition. In this region, road salting during winter is rare, which contributes to the car’s excellent state.

The vehicle has had eight registered owners since new and remains in outstanding condition for its age and mileage. It is in original specification and has been regularly serviced and properly maintained over the years. According to the current owner, the latest service was carried out in 2024, which included a fuel system overhaul with a new fuel pump and injectors, an oil and filter change, and a new timing belt.

It passed its most recent vehicle inspection in May 2024 and is approved for road use until May 31, 2026. In line with current vintage car regulations, it is tax-exempt and only requires inspection every 24 months.

The car is also equipped with a tow hitch approved for 1,500 kg, which was retrofitted in the year 2000, according to inspection records. A DEFA car alarm system is installed, although its functionality is currently uncertain. Included with the car are the original owner’s manual, warranty documents, and a substantial collection of inspection records, the oldest dating back to 1989—some of which can be viewed in the photos. A spare wheel and the original jack are also included.

This is a remote auction. All images and information regarding the car and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has not physically inspected the vehicle.

Facts about the model

The third generation of the Audi 100 was considered revolutionary when it was introduced in 1982. With a drag coefficient as low as 0.30—at a time when competitors were often around 0.40 or higher—it marked a turning point in car design and helped ignite the pursuit of better fuel efficiency. To reduce weight, the doors were made of aluminum, and Audi's streamlined bodywork also contributed to a notably quiet ride inside the cabin.

On the crucial U.S. market, the Audi 100 was sold under the name Audi 5000.

In the 1988 model year, a minor facelift was introduced—designated 88B—most easily identified by the flush-mounted door handles. The Audi 100 also became a hugely popular company car, with over 70 percent of all Audi 100s sold in Sweden going to businesses.

Production of the C3-generation Audi 100 ended in Germany in November 1990. By that time, over 55,000 units had been sold in Sweden, with a large proportion being the Avant estate model.
