Description

GM and Buick hit the jackpot with their Buick Type 40 Special model, one of the icons of the 1930s. This car was sold new in Sweden and is in a fine patinated condition. Several well-known Swedish motor historical enthusiasts have owned and cared for the car over the years, and there is reliable information recorded by them about the car and the work done. A body inspection and new paint job were done in 1978-80. Otherwise, the car is in original condition but of course maintained, serviced, and repaired as needed. It is now in good working order, and both new and old photos are available from the summer of 2022.

Facts about the model

Buick started its production as early as 1899 and is therefore one of the oldest surviving car manufacturers. When General Motors was formed in 1908, Buick was one of the brands in the group and was positioned just below GM's prestige brand Cadillac.

It was in 1931 that Buick launched its straight eight-cylinder engine. Buick had experienced sales declines after the 1929 financial crisis and in the early 1930s. For the 1936 model year, a new body and style were designed, which became a sales success. The design was created by GM's giant Harley Earl. Small changes were made over the years, but for the 1938 model year, there was, among other things, an upgrade to the front and the gasoline filler was moved from the right to the left rear fender.

For the 1938 model year, there were the Series 40 Special with a 122 inch wheelbase, Series 60 with a 126 inch wheelbase, Series 80 with a 133 inch wheelbase, and a Series 90 with a 140 inch wheelbase.

The Series 40 Special was therefore the simplest model, but since it was a Buick, it was still considered a premium car.
