Amilcar CGS — 1927

Exciting French car with vintage racing history. It competed on ice and horse tracks and may have been mistaken for a Bugatti, but that was one of its competitors.

"The development of cars over 100 years is always equally exciting and evident when you come across a vehicle from the beginning of that period. And it's even more enjoyable and clear when there is racing history involved."

Description

When the current owner was 10-11 years old in the early 1960s, he and his twin brother accompanied their father to retrieve the car in pieces from an attic in old Härnösand. It was the well-known driver Stephen "Steppen" Boström who had sold his old racing car in parts. He had intended to restore it, but it never happened and time passed by. A common cause and story. However, the father of the current owner completed the project, and the car was restored over 20 years, although it has been virtually unused for 35 years. The owner drove it a little on the farm, that's all. It has never been driven on the road. Selander was a clever man who built his own cars and airplanes. There is said to be a clip from Trafikmagasinet when he sits in one of his cars in the square in Sundsvall and tells the story about it. This particular car came to Sweden already in the early 1930s, there is documentation that tells about its registration in 1932 at least. It is well-known on the international scene and in historic racing, and we hope that it will end up on the racetrack instead of in a museum.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine has recently been started with an external fuel tank, but the car has not been driven on the road after the startup.

  • Interior condition

The seat is upholstered in a vinyl fabric, most likely the original material was leather. However, it is neatly and nicely done and the instruments are beautiful to look at.

  • Exterior condition

Fresh and nice paint that has held up well, in classic blue French racing color. Spoke wheels in good condition and vintage tires in a double sense, in both age and construction.

  • General condition

Uncommon pre-war French classic with a distinguished racing provenance. Here in a well-restored and well-preserved condition.

Facts about the model

Amilcar was a French car brand founded in 1921 by Joseph Lamy and Emile Akar. The name "Amilcar" is a combination of the names of Lamy and Akar, and the company was based in Saint-Denis, a suburb of Paris.

Amilcar specialized in producing small sports cars and racing cars with high performance, and quickly became popular among racing enthusiasts and amateur racers in Europe. The company had great success in motorsport, winning several Grand Prix racing events during the 1920s.

During the 1930s, in conjunction with the Great Depression, sales of Amilcar cars deteriorated significantly and the company faced financial difficulties. In 1937, Amilcar was purchased by Hotchkiss, another French car brand, and the production of Amilcar cars ceased the same year.
