"Few vehicles attract as much positive attention as a Messerschmitt, and few offer such a unique and exciting driving experience. This example looks great and runs well."

Description

In all likelihood, this Messerschmitt was originally sold in Sweden. Like many of its counterparts, however, it was simply stored away when it was no longer in use and subsequently fell out of the registry. In 1983, it was therefore re-registered and has had only a few owners since.

It has been restored by previous owners, and the current owner has continued to improve its condition over the past three years. Among other things, he has replaced the shock absorbers, suspension rubber components, front suspension bushings, tires, clutch plate, and gear linkage. Additionally, the rubber seal around the door/roof has been replaced, the seats have been reupholstered, and the interior side panels have been renewed.

The owner has used his Messerschmitt every summer for drives and visits to car meets, which has resulted in several trophies. The odometer, which resets at 100,000 km, currently reads 95,300 km.

The Messerschmitt is in good condition and ready to go for this year’s summer season. A relatively modern cassette radio is perhaps the most noticeable deviation from the original condition—arguably an unnecessary addition in a vehicle where driving demands full attention, and where the sound level of the Sachs engine easily drowns out the speakers.

The paintwork is in good condition but could achieve an even deeper shine with machine polishing. There is no service book, but receipts for spare parts purchased by the current owner are included. Two sets of keys are available.

The Messerschmitt is registered as a motorcycle, but three- and four-wheeled “motorcycles” may also be driven with a standard Category B (car) driver’s license.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily, the engine runs smoothly, and it shifts as it should. The brakes perform well. The owner reports a minor oil leak at the cover over the transmission, but this was not noticeable during inspection.

Two discreet modifications that improve safety are that the electrical system has been fitted with additional fuses and an electronic solenoid valve that cuts off the fuel supply when the engine is switched off. A connection for a CTEK battery charger is installed, and the charger is included with the purchase.

The gauges are functional, as are other electrical features such as the fan and windshield wipers.

  • Interior condition:

The ticking sound from the original clock is clearly audible before the engine is started. The interior is complete, clean, and in good condition.

The cassette radio, likely from the 1980s, is connected to speakers that are discreetly hidden from view. The dashboard has been slightly modified to accommodate the radio—this is not visibly noticeable, but it does make it more difficult to restore with a period-correct original unit.

  • Exterior condition:

The body is straight and in nice condition. The paintwork is in good shape and would shine even more after machine polishing. There are a few minor cracks in the paint, including on the front fenders, and some of them have been touched up. However, you need to be up close to notice the cracks and repairs.

The tires are new, and the hubcaps have also been replaced with newly manufactured ones. The owner has also fitted new rearview mirrors. The license plate light is not original.

  • General condition:

A Messerschmitt in well-maintained, restored condition that performs well mechanically and presents nicely. It is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.

Facts about the model

As early as 1946, aviation engineer Fritz Fend began manufacturing pedal-powered three-wheeled vehicles for disabled users. He later built the first prototype of a single-seat “motorcycle car” with a 50 cc engine.

In 1949, Fend started producing small, three-wheeled two-seaters known as Fend Flitzer. After around 250 Flitzers had been built by 1951, Fend’s company entered into a collaboration in 1952 with Messerschmitt in Regensburg. The aircraft manufacturer—famous for building some of Germany’s most feared fighter planes during World War II—was, due to postwar restrictions, prohibited from producing military equipment. As a result, Messerschmitt turned to other products, including sewing machines.

At the Geneva Motor Show in 1953, the Fend Kabinenroller became a major success. It featured a tubular frame clad in a sheet-metal body, with a plexiglass canopy that also served as a door. When production began at Messerschmitt, it used a 174 cc Fichtel & Sachs engine producing 9 horsepower.

In 1955, the KR175 was replaced by the KR200, which had a 191 cc engine producing 9.7 horsepower, and the flat windshield was replaced with a curved one. Production of Messerschmitt vehicles peaked in 1955, after which sales declined significantly.

In 1956, Fritz Fend founded the company FMR, which continued production when Messerschmitt was once again allowed to resume aircraft manufacturing. Fend left the company in 1964 to work as a consultant for Fichtel & Sachs. The last Messerschmitt vehicles were built in 1964, with total production reaching approximately 50,000 units.
