"A charming and lively British sports car from the golden era. Racing green, black interior, wood trim, and a rumbling straight-six are all hallmarks that deliver the right kind of experience. This example is in nicely functioning and usable condition, with some details to look over."

Description

According to available information, this car was originally sold new in the USA and was dark blue at the time. It was registered in Sweden in February 1990 and is said to have had seven owners here. The current owner acquired the car through his company in 2002 and transferred it to private ownership in June 2023. He is an enthusiast of fine British saloons and sports cars, particularly those with six-cylinder engines.

The car has always been garage-kept and maintained in good, roadworthy condition. It has been serviced and cared for by a well-known specialist in British cars. It is now equipped with triple Weber carburetors, an electric fuel pump, and telescopic shock absorbers. The clutch was replaced and the gearbox overhauled in 2010. A new cooling system (hoses and radiator) was installed in 2022. Brake hoses and master cylinder were replaced in 2024.

The odometer, which reads in miles, indicates approximately 57,400 miles. Whether the odometer has rolled over or not is uncertain. The most recent inspection was passed without remarks, and the car is delivered ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and the engine runs smoothly, though the idle is slightly high. During a gentle test drive in a residential area, the clutch felt distinct and the gear mechanism operated well. Normal performance and road handling for the model. Steering and brakes functioned properly. The car has not been inspected on a lift, but the underside and wheel arches appeared to be in good condition. No remarks at the most recent vehicle inspection.

  • Interior condition:

Interior in fine original condition, including seats, carpet mats, door panels, and wood trim. Aftermarket wood steering wheel and gear shift knob. Controls, gauges, and instrument panel are in good condition, with everything appearing to function properly. Fitted with a more modern stereo. Fire extinguisher included.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted in 2003 and still in nice, glossy condition. There is a small run and a mark in the paint. The tonneau cover is in good condition. The soft top shows some wear, with a few broken fasteners. Wheels are in good shape with minor signs of use, and the tires are in good condition. Glass, chrome, trim, and lighting components are all in good condition for the car’s age.

  • General condition:

With the same owner for 23 years, this car has been appreciated and properly cared for. The TR cars hold iconic status—bold and lively little sports cars from the golden age of British motoring. A fine classic and enthusiast’s vehicle.

Owner's comment

– With age comes wisdom, and my wife and I now feel it's time for a more spacious and comfortable summer cruiser—naturally, it will be British.

Facts about the model

After World War II, demand and production of automobiles gradually resumed. Many manufacturers revived pre-war designs, but over time, entirely new model series began to emerge. For the British automotive industry—which was somewhat conservative—it became clear that the domestic market alone was not sufficient. Exporting cars became a crucial part of the strategy.

There was a growing demand for small, affordable cars with a touch of sporty character, and the industry responded. Many American soldiers had developed a taste for the small, sporty European cars they encountered during the war, creating a hot new market. Standard, along with its Triumph brand, recognized the opportunity and introduced a new post-war series: the TR models.

Production of the TR series spanned from 1953 to 1981. The first to be introduced was the TR2, a cheeky little two-seater open roadster. By 1955, it was followed by the upgraded TR3. As British culture—fashion and music—swept across the world, British sports cars also became red-hot. Triumph continued developing the TR series with the TR4 and TR4A, featuring a body designed by Michelotti.

The excitement intensified with the launch of the TR5 in 1967, equipped with a straight-six engine borrowed from the 2000 saloon. It became Britain’s first fuel-injected car, sold in Europe, while the U.S. version came with carburetors. Already by the 1969 model year, the bodywork was updated again, this time with a new front and rear design by German firm Karmann. This marked the introduction of the TR6 designation, which remained in production from 1969 to 1976. It was offered with Lucas fuel injection or twin Zenith-Stromberg carburetors (for the U.S. market). A total of approximately 91,850 units were produced.

The TR era concluded with the TR7 and TR8, built between 1975 and 1981. These featured a 4-cylinder engine and a V8, respectively—but that’s another story.
