SAAB 92B DE Luxe 764cc — 1955

An exciting find – one might describe it as a rolling barn find, even though it saw the light of day again many years ago. Since then, it has passed three inspections, the most recent in 2018, which means that under current regulations, it is now inspection-exempt.

"An exciting project that has been standing for a few years and now needs a fresh start-up service. But after that, it’s ready to howl back onto the roads again."

Description

The car was originally purchased new by engineer Märkner in 1955. It changed hands a few times before being bought by a group of young men planning to start a band. In 1965, they headed to Stockholm to record their first album. The band was called Goa Gubbar and is said to have still been active into the early 2000s.

The journey began in Växjö but came to an abrupt end near Nynäs in Värnamo due to engine failure. As the engine couldn’t be quickly repaired, they were forced to sell the Saab for 200 SEK to the local gas station manager. Their journey continued in a used Renault Dauphine, which they bought for 400 SEK.

Meanwhile, a group of youths bought the Saab for 50 SEK, on the condition that they would repair it and formally transfer ownership. The car remained in use until 1969, when it was stored in a garage in Värnamo — where it stayed until April 2010.

After around 200 hours of work by a new owner, the car was re-registered in November 2010. The restoration was made easier by the fact that it had suffered very little rust damage.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car hasn’t been driven for a few years, but in the summer of 2024, the engine was started—see video. It appeared that a previous owner had connected some wires incorrectly at the ignition switch, preventing the fuel pump from operating properly. This should be looked into, along with other functions that could not be tested.

  • Interior condition:

In need of restoration – see photos.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint is dull and worn, but rust damage requiring attention before putting it back on the road appears to be minimal. A quick visual inspection revealed no serious issues.

  • General condition:

A solid base condition, but the car should be thoroughly checked before being put back on the road. As the car was not drivable at the time of photography, it was only visually inspected. There is no information indicating that the tow bar is approved for anything other than mounting a bicycle rack.

Facts about the model

These early Saabs are full of aviation DNA. Since Saab was originally an aircraft manufacturer, both engineers and ideas were brought over from the aviation side. With good aerodynamics, there was no need for a large, heavy engine with lots of horsepower. A small, lightweight engine with fewer horsepower offered handling that was just as good—if not better. The concept proved to be successful, with only minor updates, all the way through to 1980.

The chief engineer and driving force behind the project was Gunnar Ljungström. The design was done by Sixten Sason, who, incidentally, had an impressive portfolio of successful designs to his name.
