"This gorgeous car, with an older renovation continues to wow both inside and out. The engine and gearbox function well, and the braking system is acceptable. However, it will require more work to pass the final inspection."

Description

This car was imported from the Grand Canyon state of Arizona, which explains why the bodywork is in a rust-free condition. The first owner brought it over in 1989, and it was registered in 1991 to an owner from Härnösand. The last known inspection was conducted on 2000-02-10, and just a week later, it was purchased and added to the museum. The car has been renovated to a high standard, although it's unclear whether this was done in Sweden or before it was shipped out of the USA, as there is no documentation to confirm this.

Update from the first in Swedish Owner: The car was structurally sound but required some welding on the front and rear wings before being repainted. It doesn't have the original engine but instead features the same type of engine from a 1960 model. The original 2-speed gearbox has been replaced with a Dynaflow, which was a typical modification for these vehicles. The purchase included the original seat fabric, and during its period in the museum, the car's interior was reuppholstered.

The car comes from the Sandahl collections, which Bilweb Auctions AB will sell in the early spring under four different themes; first out are some of the family's popular workhorses, mainly Mercedes, Volkswagen, and a joker, then half a dozen exclusive fine Rolls-Royce and Jaguar, followed by a selection of early Ford cars and a Chevrolet from the childhood and youth of motoring. The last will be 7 USA cars, of which 5 are representative full-size USA cars from GM's 1959 models, the year when the fins were at their largest. Sandahls is today one of Sweden's largest family-owned transport conglomerates. The company was founded in Värnamo in 1949. Older generations have in their private museum for many years collected about 40 cars under various themes. Bilweb Auctions AB has now been tasked with selling these over four rounds in February, March, and April this year.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

After a recent service and check-up, the car is up and running, though it would improve with some detailed tuning. The brakes, including new front rubber hoses, have been checked to make sure the car stops properly, but they'll require further work. The engine and its compartment are neat, with a custom-made heater valve installed (as shown in the pictures). There's a small leak in the radiator. The car comes with stylish wheels and older tires that are still in good shape. Last inspected 2000-02-10

  • Interior condition:

The interior of the car is exceptionally clean and fresh, showcasing beautiful, undamaged blue seats and well-maintained carpets protected by plastic mat covers. The door cards and headliner are also in good condition, contributing to the overall neat appearance. The dashboard and instruments are well preserved, though the radio lights up without functioning. All electric windows are operational but would benefit from lubrication due to some older, dry seals.

  • Exterior condition:

The car's bodywork and underbody are in great shape, with no damages, dents, or rust. The paint is bright and shiny but has a couple of small paint chips, as shown in the photos. The chrome work on the car is also shiny and clean, with just a few small dents, which you can see in the pictures.

  • General condition:

This car looks good both inside and out, and it runs and drives now, but it will need more work and regular driving to get it back to top condition after sitting in a museum for many years.

Facts about the model

The 1959 Buick Electra 225 is a standout model in automotive history, marking the introduction of the Electra 225 nameplate, which would become synonymous with luxury and style in the Buick lineup. The "225" in its name refers to the car's overall length in inches, emphasizing its grandeur and presence on the road. This model year introduced sleek, dramatic styling with sweeping lines, large tailfins, and distinctive chrome detailing, setting the tone for the luxurious full-size American sedans of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Powered typically by a 401 cubic-inch V8 engine under the "nailhead" designation, the Electra 225 offered impressive performance for its size. It was equipped with features that prioritized comfort and luxury, including power steering, power brakes, and a Dynaflow automatic transmission, which was known for its smooth, seamless shifting.

The 1959 Buick Electra 225's design, with its iconic delta-wing fins and intricate grille, embodied the optimism and forward-looking spirit of the era. Its interior was equally lavish, with spacious seating, high-quality materials, and advanced (for its time) technological conveniences.
