"Nice classic Volvo in used condition."

Description

The current owner has owned the car since 2020, but it was only transferred to him in March 2023. This car has been driven in Dalarna since new. According to the odometer, the Volvo is a low-mileage car, which seems to be confirmed by the condition of the interior, where even the delivery plastic on the doors is still in place. The fenders and rocker panels have rust damage, probably due to use on Dalarna's gravel roads during its early life. The car has been sitting idle for a while, so a thorough service may be needed. Some interesting documentation is included, such as a inspection report from September 27, 2010. At that time, the Volvo had only been driven 10 930 km, see pictures.

The engine and drivetrain are in working order. The car needs a startup service.

  • General condition

The car needs to be inspected and serviced after a long period of inactivity.

Facts about the model

Volvo owes a lot to consultant Helmer Petterson. With a background at motorcycle manufacturer Excelsior in Chicago, he returned home in the 1930s and developed several gas generator sets. In 1943, Volvo began selling his generators and during a sales trip, he suggested to Volvo's founder, Assar Gabrielsson, that they should build a small car. The inspiration for the body primarily came from the US, and the design was largely created by Helmer Petterson and Volvo engineer Lennart Jern.

Both wanted the new car to be front-wheel drive, but Gustaf Larson decided that it would have rear-wheel drive with a four-cylinder engine mounted lengthwise. The first cars were shown already in September 1944 at the Royal Tennis Hall in Stockholm, but the first cars were not delivered until February 8, 1947. The PV444 was then produced until 1957 when it was replaced by the PV544.
