"Reportedly, 10 of the 16 built examples still exist, with 8 said to be roadworthy—a solid survival rate."

Description

According to known records, Ringborgs Karosserifabrik built 16 examples, Valbo 22, and Norbergs 1. In the 1950s, building a glamorous PV Cabriolet on what was known as a delivery chassis—typically reserved for utility vehicles—was considered highly exclusive. The auction car’s first owner reflects that notion well. It was delivered new by Jacobssons Bil AB in Stora Tuna to AB CTH Ericsson in Borlänge, where it served as a stylish company car, later also driven by the owner's wife and daughter for leisure and pleasure.

The current owner has compiled a detailed history, including an amusing account of a stereotypical used car salesman and a few past owners who, with a twist, tried to rewrite the car’s manufacturing origins—even during a car show in the 1980s. An article in *Bilsport* magazine, oddly written and seemingly without any research, is part of that twist. The reveal and story behind it can be found among the photos—a fun little anecdote in the car’s history. The current owner has, of course, maintained and cared for the vehicle well over his 17 years of ownership.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car is currently fitted with a B16 engine, having undergone an engine swap from the original B4B to a B14A back in 1960. That later engine now resides in a P1900, which the current owner sold at auction last year—an arguably more fitting home for it. The B16 feels healthy, and with its three-speed gearbox, the car has a fairly low final drive ratio.

  • Interior condition

Original leather upholstery with a few split seams and some repairs on the driver’s seat. Otherwise, it’s in a pleasantly worn condition with loads of charming patina.

  • Exterior condition

All indications suggest the car received its current paint in the mid-1970s, at which time the rear fenders were also replaced. Beyond that, nothing else has been restored. Today, it presents as charming and respectable, with a well-functioning convertible top.

The yellow shade on the wheels was painted according to a specified color code which, as it turned out, wasn’t quite accurate—hence the slight color mismatch.

  • General condition

Overall, the car has a handsome patina, and its well-used character—combined with solid mechanical condition and an entertaining history—is, in many ways, worth preserving just as it is.

Facts about the model

The Ringborg Volvo PV Cabriolet from 1953 is based on a delivery chassis from the Volvo PV445. This convertible version wasn’t built by Volvo themselves, but by the coachbuilder Ringborgs Karosserifabrik in Norrköping. During the 1950s, it was relatively common for independently made special-bodied cars to be produced in small series. According to records, Ringborg built 16 PV445 cabriolets.
