Description

This car is one of just 60 identical examples produced by Volvo in the spring of 1989 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of one of Volvo’s oldest and largest dealerships – Brandt Bil – based in Västra Götaland. Nicknamed the “Brandt Edition,” the car stands out with its silver metallic paint, color-matched Sirius wheels, 760-style trim strip, and rear reflector panel.

The interior was also borrowed from the 760, featuring blue velour upholstery, wood trim, color-coordinated black and blue details, a top-of-the-line stereo, engine heater, rear window sunshade, and blue carpets. These cars were offered to especially valued customers. This particular example was kept as a display and promotional car for three years before being handed over to the wife of the company’s CEO, who also worked at the dealership.

She owned the car for over 30 years, mainly using it for long-distance drives and vacation trips. When not in use, it was stored in the basement of Brandt’s Uddevalla facility. According to records, it was never driven during winter months. In 2023, the car was sold via a Volvo enthusiast to its current owner – a well-known automotive journalist who now works with Volvo’s Heritage division. He has used the car at various events and gatherings, including personally chauffeuring representatives of Volvo’s current owners to and from Landvetter Airport.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car drives beautifully. Everything works as it should and feels just right. It rolls smoothly, steers, accelerates, and brakes without any vibrations or unwanted noises. It has been well serviced and comes with extensive documentation and all original keys.

The car is fitted with all-season tires in good condition and has received comprehensive rustproofing and cavity sealing. Thanks to this, it looks virtually new underneath and shows no signs of corrosion in the usual trouble spots. The engine bay is also in excellent condition, with no oxidized bolts or components. The trunk appears unused.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in excellent condition—seats, door panels, and trim show no flaws. All features and controls work perfectly. The only issue the car ever had has since been resolved. A common problem with these models is the headliner fabric coming loose from the backing. This was professionally addressed several years ago by the specialists at Color Glo in Gothenburg, who removed and reupholstered the headliner with new fabric.

  • Exterior condition:

Flawless original paint, with no noticeable stone chips or scratches. Glass, chrome, and plastic trim are all in excellent condition. It’s clear the car has been stored indoors and driven carefully, away from salted or slushy roads.

  • General condition:

A truly fine car, in a rare and highly appealing specification that turns heads and inspires desire. There’s usually something to criticize—but not with this one. Most likely thanks to its careful ownership by people close to Volvo, indoor storage, and the fact that it’s never been fitted with a tow bar.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 740, along with the 760, was produced from 1982 to 1992, when it was succeeded by the closely related 940/960 series. The model saw continuous refinement throughout its production run, with numerous updates each year. A key improvement for the 1989 model year was the introduction of a fully galvanized underbody, including the floor and sills.
