Volkswagen T2 Kleinbus 221 1.6 — 1971

The first owner was Harry Gustavsson, who ran Väse Bilstation, which a few years later developed into the well-known company Väsebussarna. Harry used it as a school bus, driving students to Väseskolan and Öna byskola. Harry was known for being meticulous with his vehicles. The bus was ordered with extra equipment for school transport duty, hence the large running board fitted by V.A.G before delivery. As early as 1974, the bus was traded in at Lecab in Karlstad.

In July 1974, the Volkswagen bus was purchased by the current owner's family, who at the time lived in the village of Östmark in northern Värmland. It was registered to the father, Gustav, who remained the registered owner until 1981, when the son in the family took over ownership. The bus was used for several vacation trips to Norway during the 1970s. In 1977, the family drove the bus all the way up to the North Cape. Several photographs from these vacation trips have been preserved; see the end of the photo series. In 1988, the bus was put into the garage at the family home in Östmark. There it remained until 1992, when it was brought out again for a vacation trip to Marstrand in connection with the European Soccer Championship. The bus was then garaged again until 2015, when the owner decided to carry out an overhaul and refurbishment. Since 2015, the bus has received new parts in stages, along with brake restoration, rust repair, touch-up paintwork, and more. Since 2016, most of the work has been carried out by the highly regarded Volkswagen specialist Fahlke Classic Cars in Åmål. This Volkswagen T2 has become like an extra member of the family for the owner. He is now parting with the bus for health reasons. The odometer shows just under 87,000 km, and the owner guarantees that this is correct. The bus has had four registered owners from new, of which two were actual users: the first owner, who drove schoolchildren, and then the Kjellgren family.
The bus comes with a spare wheel, jack, and original tools, as well as a complete binder with full documentation, including workshop receipts and older registration certificates. The owner has written down the bus's entire history, which is included in the binder. We are publishing an excerpt of the text under the heading Owner's Comments. One of the old school transport signs from its days as a school bus is also included. (The camping table visible in one of the photos is not included.)

• Mechanical condition

  Starts easily and runs very well. Equipped with Volkswagen's classic air-cooled four-cylinder 1.6-liter boxer engine, or 1600 as Volkswagen enthusiasts say. Runs steadily and smoothly. All technical features such as lighting, brakes, and heating work normally. Equipped with an auxiliary gasoline heater that has not been tested.

• Interior condition

  Completely original from top to bottom. This is exactly how the bus looked when delivered in 1971. The door panel on the sliding door has had a repair, but otherwise the interior is untouched. The interior has acquired a slight patina from the passage of time, and apart from a few minor stains on the center seat cushion, we find nothing worth noting. It is very unusual for the original interior to be in such fine and well-kept condition. A fun detail is that the bus was delivered with an extra school-transport lock on the sliding door, operated from the front by the driver.

• Exterior condition

  Attractive exterior. The upper part of the bus still retains its original paint from 1971. It has always been kept in a garage, which has protected the paint from excessive sun exposure.
  
  The lower sections of the sides received some paintwork in connection with the replacement of minor body panels at Fahlke Classic Cars. The front has also been repainted in more recent years.
  
  The paintwork shows some patina but presents well overall. The body is straight and tidy along the sides, with good and even panel gaps. All doors operate without any issues, including the distinctive side door.
  
  The tyres were new in 2015 and remain in good condition.

My parents bought the Volkswagen bus on July 26, 1974, from Lecab in Karlstad. The bus had been traded in four days earlier by its first owner, who had used it to drive schoolchildren in Väse. I was eleven years old and remember going with my parents to look at the bus before the purchase. My mother came from Norway, so there were many vacation trips there with the bus. On one occasion we went all the way to the North Cape, and I remember being fascinated by the midnight sun. My mother Greta competed in traffic driving, precision driving, and also in timed events. She kept at it for many years and was named Motor Woman of the Year several times. She usually competed in VW Beetles. For many years, my mother led traffic safety courses for motorists and moped riders. The bus was perfect to use when she traveled all around northern Värmland with literature and a film projector. I would come along to help carry things and keep her company along the winding, dark roads on autumn and winter evenings in northern Värmland. My very first drive of my own with the Volkswagen bus was in 1981, on the same day I passed my driver's license test. I borrowed the bus and drove from our home in Östmark into Torsby to go to the movies. It felt like a big deal! The bus was deregistered and parked in a garage at my parents' home between 1988 and 1992. In 1992, I went on vacation to the west coast with some friends in it, the same year the European soccer championship was played in Sweden. We stayed at Marstrand (on the mainland), but were not allowed into the campground because we were driving a Volkswagen bus and were too young! So we spent a night in a public parking lot near the ferry landing. It was full of soccer fans and many other Volkswagen buses. When we returned to the bus during the night after a visit into Marstrand, we witnessed the aftermath of a fight between German and English soccer hooligans. The riots had apparently taken place at the parking lot around the buses, and the Volkswagen bus parked next to mine was completely smashed up. The police managed to disperse the troublemakers, and my bus escaped unharmed. The bus was then parked in the garage again between 1992 and 2015. That is when I decided to have it restored and start using it again. Inspection reports are preserved from the years 1979 to 1983, as well as 1988, 1992, 2016, 2018, and 2020. The last inspection was in 2020, as it is now exempt from inspection under the classic vehicle rules. The only reason I am now selling my pride and joy, which has been in the family's ownership for more than 50 years, is for health reasons. Here I list some of the things we have addressed on it: 2015 Rear wheel cylinders, brake shoes, brake linings, carburetor rebuild kit, valve cover gasket, new battery, replacement of generator. 2016 Fahlke Classic Cars. Overhaul of brakes, brake master cylinder, hose replacements, adjustment of parking brake, replacement of generator brushes, fan belt, charging relay, cleaning and adjustment of carburetor, ignition, rear hinges. Some rust repair, side member, cross member, rear body corner, sanding down of rocker panels and fender edges. 2017 Gula Garaget Karlstad. Basic service with oil change. 2018 Fahlke Classic Cars. Some rust repair has been carried out on the body, including the replacement of a small, specially fabricated panel made to the original specification. The repair was carried out to the lower section of the left rear wheel arch. 2018 Fahlke Classic Cars. Sanding, touch-up painting, polishing. 2019 CJ's Allservice Arvika. Rust protection with Carosol F40 on the undercarriage and Carosol T03 in cavities. 2020 Högdahls Bilservice, Koppom. Replacement of shock absorbers (four), replacement of tie rods, replacement of steering damper, lubrication of front/rear brakes. Adjustment of wheel bearings. 2025 Fahlke Classic Cars. Installed a factory-new muffler and heat exchanger. Tidied up the engine compartment. Paint and cleaning. New fuel hoses and filter, relocated these to a safer position. Sanded and painted under the passenger seat. Adjusted brakes. The total for workshop labor carried out from 2015 to 2025 amounts to approximately 135,000 kronor, plus the cost of spare parts. Receipts are available for everything. PS! This Volkswagen T2 has been in my family since 1974, when I was eleven years old, and I guarantee that the odometer reading is correct since the bus was new.

The Volkswagen Transporter T2 Baywindow was introduced in the late summer of 1967 as a 1968 model and was the second generation of Volkswagen's popular commercial vehicle. It replaced the original T1 model, the Splitscreen, and earned its nickname thanks to the new, large one-piece panoramic windshield that improved forward visibility. In addition to the updated styling, the T2 offered a considerably more modern design with a safer body, improved rear suspension with semi-trailing arms, and an electrical system upgraded to 12 volts. Mechanically, the proven layout of a rear-mounted air-cooled boxer engine was retained. The model evolved in two main phases during its European life cycle: the early generation, the Early Bay (1968–1971), is recognizable by its low-mounted front turn signals and small, oval taillights, while the later generation, the Late Bay (1973–1979), received high-mounted turn signals next to the grille, larger rectangular taillights, and sturdier bumpers.
