It was privately imported to Sweden as early as 1975 and could therefore also be registered with 2 passengers (the middle seat), which was otherwise not approved on the Swedish market for these cars. Some form of restoration was carried out in the eighties or nineties. The car was taken off the road and put into a barn in 2001 when the owner moved to Australia full-time. It was brought out a couple of years ago by the current owner, who got it rolling and tidied up the interior. An extra car with registration PJC151 is included whether you want it or not. Simply seize the opportunity, say thank you and accept. The owner bought it as a parts car, and this one also has 2 passengers on the registration certificate and is additionally equipped with power windows. The condition of the parts car is more or less rust-free, but completely disassembled (including the engine, which is in a box).

Mechanical condition
The engine starts on all cylinders using an external fuel can. Beyond that, we have not been able to perform any further technical assessment. The brakes are loose in a box alongside the car.

Interior condition
White vinyl upholstery. Otherwise a representative interior to look after, straighten up, and sort out. The right-hand door cannot be opened.

Exterior condition
Repainted at some point in the eighties or nineties. Presentable as a project car, and the exterior is a good starting point. The wheels are from a Volkswagen Polo; the original wheels are included on the parts car. Surface rust on the chassis, but sound metal underneath, according to the owner. He has gone over the entire chassis with a sharp and unforgiving hammer.

As a whole, this is an affordable project opportunity for the right enthusiast. The model is uncommon, it is especially fun from a pure passenger transport perspective, and moreover a joy to drive when all the parameters of engine, chassis, and brakes are in order.

Facts about the model
The Matra Simca Bagheera was introduced in April 1973 and was born out of a collaboration between the French car manufacturer Simca (owned by Chrysler Europe) and the automotive division of the aerospace and defense group Matra. The car was developed under the project name M550 as a successor to the Matra 530, with the goal of creating a sports car that was affordable yet technically advanced. The Bagheera, named after the panther in The Jungle Book, distinguished itself as a mid-engined coupe with three seats side by side instead of the traditional 2+2 layout. An innovative interior that saved space and provided optimal weight distribution. To keep costs down, Matra borrowed components directly from Simca's existing range, including the suspension and the 84 hp 1.3-liter engine from the Simca 1100 TI. Thanks to an aerodynamic fiberglass-reinforced plastic body mounted on a steel chassis, the car weighed just under 900 kg and offered lively driving characteristics. Despite a good reception from the motoring press and a successful launch, the model was plagued early on by reliability issues, and the chassis's susceptibility to severe rust gave it a poor reputation. Matra responded to the criticism with ongoing updates; in 1975 the Bagheera S was introduced with a larger 1.4-liter engine producing 90 horsepower, and in 1976 the entire model received a facelift (Series II) with more modern bumpers and taillights. Special versions were also made, such as the all-white Courrèges edition designed in collaboration with the fashion house André Courrèges. Peugeot acquired Chrysler Europe in 1978 and changed the brand name to Talbot Matra Bagheera during the model's final year of production. When manufacturing finally ceased in 1980, a total of 47,802 examples had rolled off the line, before it was succeeded by the similar but improved Matra Murena.
