"Dignified, smooth, and comfortable on the road, with a pleasant driving joy in the engine that recalls the brand’s much later well-known motto “Freude am Fahren.”"

Description

It was delivered new to Director Rudolf Köhler by Förenade Bil AB in Gothenburg in December 1957. The first two service occasions at 1,230 km and 2,850 km are noted in the service book, where the technician at the latter occasion lingered in time and mistakenly wrote 1956 instead of 1958. In any case, Köhler drove the BMW fairly sparingly for 15 years, and when he sold it in 1972 to student Leif Frändberg, it had covered just over 90,000 km. Frändberg did not drive much either and deregistered the car two years later, on 1974-11-30, with the odometer reading 93,578 km. It then remained unused for 31 years until 2005, when the next owner bought the car. In 2014, he had Barockengel authority Pelles Bilar & Motorrenoveringar in Billeberga carry out a thorough mechanical overhaul with a minor restoration: bearings, seals, clutch, flywheel, brakes, and water pump, among other things.
The current owner bought the car in October 2017, and he also took it to Pelle several times for some mechanical work and general servicing. Everything is listed in the pictures and, of course, in the extensive binder. There you will also find all inspection records since AB Svensk Bilprovning started in Sweden in 1964, older tax receipts from before 1973, the first registration certificate, the interim license from 1957, and so on. Fun and entertaining to browse through. The most recent and thus last approved inspection was carried out on 2017-07-11 at 99,040 km, meaning the car was in an approved inspection period when the new inspection regulations came into effect on 2018-04-20. Today, the odometer has rolled over once and shows 2,971 km, giving a total mileage of 102,790 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The aluminum V8 runs smoothly and with character, the gear positions are easy to find once you get used to it, and the brakes – including the parking brake – work evenly and effectively. The current owner has installed electronic ignition, which also contributes to the engine’s pleasant character, together with an electric fuel pump, the latter being a common modification on these cars where the mechanical pump was prone to vapor lock. Also note the retractable and easily cleaned air filters next to the radiator for the fresh air intake into the cabin.

  • Interior condition:

Untouched interior in beautiful condition with only slight wear on the driver’s side. Door panels, headliner, dashboard, steering wheel, and controls – everything is intact, clean, and neat. The original radio and speaker also look nice, but the radio’s functionality is uncertain. The owner has also installed more modern seat belts for safer comfort for everyone on board.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paint except for one fender and some touch-ups on the fenders and roof – on the latter, a ladder had fallen. These touch-ups do not significantly affect the overall impression; it is a car that has seen life, and for many, original paint with history carries more value than a respray. Original only once, as they say. The car received new tires, including the spare, in 2024.

  • General condition:

One could not wish for better documentation, and on top of that a well-kept and in many ways untouched old, strong luxury cruiser with an important place in the brand’s history.

Facts about the model

The model earned the nickname “Baroque Angel” from its bulging and curvy body design and its extensive chrome decoration. It was an expensive car and sold slowly on the Swedish market. In its final years, the car was sold under the model designation 3200 instead of the earlier 502.
