SAAB 9-3 TTiD Cabriolet Independence Edition Nr: 8/37 — 2012

One of the last convertibles from Saab, this is also an early example from the Independence Edition series, numbered 8 out of a target of 336 produced. However, only 37 units were made before bankruptcy halted production. It has an interesting history, having been exported from England to Holland and then to Sweden.

"An attractive convertible that must be considered an important automotive historical Saab model for the future. The additional name reflects a hopeful vision for the time, but also serves as a bittersweet reminder of the brand’s demise."

"An attractive convertible that must be considered an important automotive historical Saab model for the future. The additional name reflects a hopeful vision for the time, but also serves as a bittersweet reminder of the brand’s demise."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner in England by the Saab dealer Alexanders Motor Group in Teesside, near Middlesbrough, in April 2011. The owner, Ms. Myco, drove the car relatively normally, averaging 13 000 kilometers per year, until 2016 when the former Dutch general agent for Saab purchased it. That company had previously acquired a significant portion of the parts inventory during the brand’s bankruptcy, allowing them to perform a relatively advanced conversion from right-hand drive to left-hand drive.

In 2021, the current owner bought the car from Saab dealer Venza Exclusive Cars in Almere, Holland, after a long search for an Independence Edition. It was registered in Sweden in April of the same year. He has driven just 580 kilometers since then, with more than that not accumulated over four summer seasons. The most recent approved inspection was conducted very recently, on 2024-09-18.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

A reliable and lively diesel engine known as TTiD (twin turbo), paired with a pleasant automatic transmission. All electrical systems function smoothly without any issues, and the brakes and road handling are equally good.

  • Interior condition:

Inviting leather upholstery and a nice interior overall. The odometer still shows miles, as that was the only thing that couldn’t be converted. 51,723 miles equates to 83 220 kilometers today.

  • Exterior condition:

Beautiful paint in a bold color, Amber Orange Metallic. There is a clear coat blemish/shadow on the rear bumper. The original wheels have some scuff marks at the front and are fitted with newer Continental tires at the front and slightly older ones at the back, both with good tread.

  • General condition:

An interesting, optimistic model from Saab’s final years, attractive and sought after by enthusiasts. This is a well-maintained example with an initial normal usage history before being preserved and modified by enthusiasts.

Facts about the model

“This is our Independence Day, and we will celebrate that we are once again masters of our own destinies, free to make our own judgments and decisions,” said then-CEO Jan Åke Jonsson during the announcement of Saab Independence Day. The day was celebrated at the Saab factory in Trollhättan with cake and musical performances. In March 2011, the 9-3 Cabriolet Independence Edition was unveiled to the public at the Geneva Motor Show. However, by the time of the bankruptcy in December 2011, only 37 units had been produced due to Saab’s difficulties in obtaining parts and financing.
