"The owner is well known within the VW community, and the car has been enjoyed as a summer car throughout his ownership. Maintained by the owner and always kept in good running condition, it is ready for the next owner to enjoy. The car is also inspection-exempt."

Description

This 1967 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia started life in Nevada, USA, before eventually making its way to just outside San Diego. The current owner is himself American but has lived in Sweden for more than 30 years and is well known within the VW community.

Looking for a solid Karmann Ghia, he spotted this car advertised on TheSamba forum, coincidentally in the same area where he had previously lived. His father went to view the car on his behalf and, after some negotiation, a deal was made and the Ghia was driven back to his father’s home. His father later called to say that the suspension needed replacing — not realising that the car had intentionally been lowered!

The previous American owner was also a VW enthusiast and had made several worthwhile upgrades, including a 1915 cc engine, external oil cooler and lowered suspension. A set of original Fuchs alloy wheels completes the California-style look.

The car has received an older repaint which still presents well today, while the interior remains clean and tidy. It has been enjoyed as a summer car in Sweden and maintained by its owner to keep it in good running condition.

On the road, it is a genuinely fun Karmann Ghia to drive. The owner reports that it cruises comfortably on the motorway at 110–120 km/h, while the 1915 cc engine gives it plenty of response when you push the accelerator. The lowered stance is exactly how the owner likes the car, although the ride height can be adjusted if the next owner prefers.

Recently serviced and inspection-exempt, the car is ready to be enjoyed. It has seen relatively little use during the past two years and is only being sold to make way for another purchase.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Easy to start, with a good, stable-running engine that just needs a minute to warm up properly. On the road, the car feels balanced, with smooth gear changes through the trigger shifter and solid brakes. As mentioned, the ride height can also be raised if desired. The car has just been serviced and is fitted with disc brakes all round.

A nice set of original Fuchs alloy wheels is fitted with good tyres all round. The car has been serviced yearly and is ready to drive and enjoy. It is permanently inspection and road-tax exempt.

  • Interior condition

Interior is super clean and tidy, with beige/white vinyl seats all in very good condition. The only remark is that the rear backrest cover on the driver’s seat is slightly loose along one edge. Door cards, interior panels, headliner and carpets are all in great condition.

The dashboard is also clean and well presented. The gauges work, although the speedometer needs some attention as it is currently reading too high. Upgrades include a Bluetooth stereo, bamboo parcel shelf and trigger shifter.

  • Exterior condition

A super solid car all round, and it is obvious that it has come from a dry climate. There are no notable rust problems, the bodywork is straight with no significant dents or damage, and the underside is exceptionally solid. The only visible repair appears to be in the spare-wheel well, a common area for attention on these cars.

The two-tone white and metallic aqua-blue paintwork presents well overall. There are a few touch-ups around the bootlid, together with some minor scratches and stone chips consistent with age.

The driver’s door would benefit from new hinge pins, as it drops slightly when opened, and there are also a few paint scuffs around the front of the door.

  • General condition

A cool-looking car with a quick engine and some sought-after extras. It certainly turns heads, and with the mechanical side sorted and solid bodywork, it’s an ideal car to enjoy at the next VW meeting!
