Description
The exterior shows some patina with several touch-ups, but underneath the car is quite solid, with only 175,000 km on the odometer. As it has seen very little use over the past 30 years—and only occasional outings since 2020—a technical inspection would help ensure reliability. Nevertheless, it has recently passed inspection and performed well during the test drive. It has also just received an oil service along with new ignition components.
Although the service book and inspection records could not be found, the car is far from without history, as the seller recalls much about how his father cared for it. It comes with two sets of ignition keys as well as three sets of keys for the doors and trunk. A moving box filled with spare parts is included in the sale, though no winter tires are available.
The Volvo 242 L was the entry-level model of the new 1975 lineup and inherited the reliable B20 engine from the 140 series. The B20 gives it a slightly different engine note compared to most Volvo 240s. Combined with its period-correct color code 116-1 yellow, it doesn’t get much more 1970s than this.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
Starts easily and idles smoothly. The gearbox, brakes, and steering all feel good, and it responds well to throttle input, although under full acceleration it did run a bit unevenly during the test drive. The suspension and chassis also gave a solid impression, with no rattles or other unwanted noises. The warning light for the bulb failure sensor was illuminated, which may be connected to the fact that the hazard lights were not working. Electrical functions such as the cabin fan, windshield wipers, washer system, and radio are all in proper working order.
-
Interior condition
The interior mainly gives a tidy impression. The driver’s seat upholstery has a small tear, and the glovebox lock is missing. A somewhat newer Blaupunkt Bristol cassette radio is fitted in place with the help of styrofoam. The rear side panels have faded, and the rubber mats are dry and cracked. One of the front rubber mats is a newer type, and one of the rear mats is missing. The nearly indestructible plastic headliner is clean and in good condition. Door seals and window winders are without issue. The trunk gives a good impression and has the correct rubber mat. The spare wheel and jack are present. The center console is missing a plastic cover, and the fuse box cover next to the driver’s door has come loose.
-
Exterior condition
The body appears straight but the paint, mostly original, is faded and uneven. According to the owner, the sills have been replaced and repainted in recent years. Several touch-ups of rust spots can be seen on the body along with a few minor surface rust areas. The typical rust-prone spots on the 240 series, such as the rear wheel arch edges and the spare wheel wells, are on this car essentially free from rust. The upper rubber trim on the bumpers is missing both front and rear.
-
General condition
The fact that it has only received touch-ups and still retains its original paint makes it a very unusual car, considering the rust issues Volvo had in the mid-1970s. There are a number of touch-ups on the body, yet the areas where the 240 series normally suffers from rust are in good condition on this car. During a test drive, the Volvo ran well and it feels fundamentally sound mechanically.
