Volkswagen Typ1 1200 Oval — 1955

This year’s coolest Volkswagen barn find? A northern Sweden car that’s back on the road after 40 years in storage. Used by its first owner until 1976. Now inspected, approved, and ready to drive.

"The car is in an incredibly charming and honest driver’s condition. It almost feels presumptuous to call it a “barn find.” But it was indeed in a barn that this car was stored between 1976 and 2017. After a thorough check with new brakes and new tires, the car passed inspection in 2018 and, according to current regulations, remains approved indefinitely. We find nothing that requires immediate attention—the car is ready to drive."

Description

The first owner was Greta Lundborg, who bought her Beetle new in 1955. She lived in a village called Norriån, about 50 km north of Råneå in Norrbotten County. Greta ran a country store in Norriån and used the car to collect milk in Råneå. The original owner’s plate with Greta’s name still remains in the car.
She owned the car until 1976, when a family member named Ivar took it over. At the same time, the car was taken off the road and stored in the barn. There it stood until 1999, when a cousin inherited it. The car then changed location and barn, where it was again stored away. It remained untouched until 2017, when the current owner acquired it. He brought the car home, washed it, removed the seat covers that had been on since new, and was pleasantly surprised at how well the car had survived. The only rust he found was a little on the wheel arches. The chassis and body were otherwise intact, though two holes under the rear seat needed repair. Upon closer inspection, it turned out the car still had its original paintwork. The fuel system was cleaned, the tank drained of old fuel, the braking system refurbished, and the car was serviced with new oil and ignition parts, etc. The car then started without any problems. An exterior polish and interior cleaning were carried out. The car had some stone chips which were touched up. On May 19, 2018, the car passed inspection and was approved by the Swedish vehicle authority. The odometer shows just over 41,000 km, but as it has likely turned over once, the correct mileage is considered to be around 141,000 km. According to the vehicle register, the Beetle has had four registered owners including the current one. However, only the first owner actually used the car. The current owner has driven about 700 km since 2018. Unfortunately, the key was lost during the 41 years in storage, so the ignition lock has been replaced and keys for the door locks are missing.
The car comes with a spare wheel, the original jack, and a box of parts. A fun detail is that the 1970s number plates are still with the car, although the front one needs to be refitted.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

1200 engine with 4-speed gearbox, unsynchronized first gear. 6-volt electrical system. Brakes fully refurbished in 2017. The engine runs very well, and the gearbox also works smoothly. According to the owner, a minor transmission noise can be heard from the gearbox, which he believes may come from a bearing. However, the sound has not changed or increased in volume since the car was put back on the road in 2017. The owner has driven to car meets as far as 150 km away without issues. In the long run, the gearbox could be taken apart for inspection.

  • Interior condition:

Everything except the rubber floor mats is original from 1955. The interior is in fantastic condition for its age, most likely thanks to the first owner, Greta, who took good care of the car and even fitted protective seat covers. Even the door rubber seals are original and in good condition. See pictures.

  • Exterior condition:

According to the owner, the paintwork is original, and we have no reason to doubt that. There are many stone chips on the front that have been touched up, as well as some scratches and a few small rust spots—see the picture of the lower rear fenders where there are small rust holes. On closer inspection, a few dents can also be seen in the roof panel. We believe something may have fallen onto the car during its time in the barn. However, this does not detract from the overall condition. See pictures. New tires with clip-on whitewalls were fitted to the original wheels in 2018. The wheels were sandblasted and powder-coated first. The bumpers were also replaced with new ones at the same time.

  • General condition:

The car is in a charming and honest driver’s condition. What you see is what you get. Only one user until 1976, and then brought back into traffic again in 2017. The car has never been restored—only repaired with new brakes, reconditioned, fitted with new bumpers, given a general inspection and regular servicing.

Facts about the model

About the village where the car remained until 1999:

Norriån is a small village located by the Livas River, about 60 km north of Boden, “where the asphalt road ends” and where the northern lights appear with exceptional clarity. The village is surrounded by lakes with evocative names: Stor-Lappträsket, Mörtträsket, and Grundträsket, as well as the smaller waters Lappen, Vintervägstjärnen, Nedre Tjuven, and Håkanstjärnen. Flowing through the village is the Mörtträskbäcken stream, with a preserved 19th-century watermill. The houses are characterized by red-painted buildings constructed during the 1940s and 1950s with the help of the favorable housing loans available at the time.
