Description
The hydrofoil boat, early on named Odd Ball, was built by the Volga shipyard in the Soviet Union in 1964. In the mid-1980s, the boat was purchased by a Danish boatbuilder in the USA. The new owner saw in the boat an opportunity to combine the hull’s fine lines and function with a superstructure in classic American runabout style. Over the following years, the boat was dismantled, renovated, and given a new superstructure and deck in teak and mahogany. The engine installed was a marine-converted, seawater-cooled Chevrolet Big Block, 454 cu from 1983, producing about 300 hp, with stainless steel valves and a Holley 800 carburetor. The engine is mounted with the output shaft facing forward, transferring power to the propeller via a reverse gear and angle drive. The V8 engine and several other parts came from the renowned specialist Glenwood Marine. It has additional silencers and runs on regular 95-octane unleaded gasoline. Reported fuel consumption is about 1 liter per nautical mile. Cruising speed is about 30 knots, but top speed is considerably higher.
The boat rises onto the front hydrofoils at 7 knots and onto the rear ones at 22 knots. Length is 8.55 meters (29 feet), beam 1.97 m, and weight 1,500 kg. The fuel tank holds 260 liters. For improved maneuverability, it is equipped with a Sidepower S640 bow thruster. The three-blade cupped 20x25 propeller comes from Glenwood Marine.
The Danish boatbuilder sold the hydrofoil in 1999, but in 2007 it was bought back by his son, who brought it back to Denmark. A few years later it changed ownership again and ended up in Stockholm, where it has since been owned by two friends who have shared the use of the hydrofoil. The current owner has had it for three years. The rebuilt Volga 70 has been featured in several magazine articles, including Båtnytt, Klassiska Båtar, and Nostalgia. The boat has also been exhibited at the boat show Allt för Sjön on two different occasions. Included with the purchase are a harbor cover in good condition and a custom-built launching trolley.

Mechanical condition
Starts easily and the engine runs well. A new electrical system was installed a couple of years ago, and a wiring diagram is included with the purchase. The reverse gear and angle drive have also been recently renovated. All Stewart Warner instruments are functioning. Two sets of ignition keys are included.

Interior condition
Two seats with green leather cushions in good condition. A small part of the teak wood in the rear deck is damaged.

The aluminum hull is in good condition, as are the stainless steel hydrofoils. The solid Honduras mahogany and teak deck has aged well.

Still in good condition after the high-quality renovation it underwent in the 1980s.
Facts about the model
The first hydrofoil boat was developed in Italy in 1905 by the aeronautical engineer Enrico Forlanini. A hydrofoil has wing-like foils mounted beneath the vessel’s hull, and as speed increases the boat rises onto the foils, lifting the hull out of the water. This gives a hydrofoil less friction against the water compared to a conventional vessel, allowing for higher speeds and reduced fuel consumption. In commercial shipping, the technology is perhaps best known from the Flying Boats that operated the Malmö–Copenhagen route between 1963 and 1987.
In the Soviet Union, hydrofoils were also embraced, particularly for passenger traffic on rivers. The Volga 70 was developed by Rostislav Alexeyev, and it is said that 6,800 examples were produced between 1958 and 1986. It was exported worldwide by the Soviet trade organization Sudoimport, and a few examples are believed to have been sold in Sweden through Wiking Marin in Täby. The Swedish-sold boats were equipped with Volvo Penta engines.
