"Fun roadster with a distinct Fiat feeling. Affordable, simple, and joyful to drive. And open."

Description

It was delivered new to its first owner in Sweden in October 1999. The register lists 11 owners, though the actual number of using owners is 7 or 8. All appear to have driven the car very sparingly, judging by the mileage records from each inspection.

It is now being sold by an estate, and the relatives have not been able to locate an owner’s manual or service book. However, there is a binder with invoices and receipts that show some maintenance, most notably a proper four-wheel alignment that resolved handling issues the owner had previously been dissatisfied with.

Two timing belt changes have been carried out, noted on stickers in the engine bay – one in 2015 and one in 2021. The most recent approved inspection was on 2024-09-13 at 52,150 km, and the odometer now reads 52,200 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine makes a slight initial sound immediately at start-up, but then quickly runs normally. The sound can be heard in the video. Gearbox and brakes feel as they should. According to stickers in the engine bay, the timing belt was replaced both in 2015 at 34,900 km and in 2021 at 52,000 km.

  • Interior condition:

Relatively unworn interior, with a simple cleaning of the driver’s seat cushion as an easy fix. Otherwise, only a normal need for some cleaning and detailing.

  • Exterior condition:

Presentable and still attractive blue metallic paint with minor blemishes and stone chips. Newer rear tires and older front tires from different manufacturers, mounted on nice 17” aftermarket rims. According to the register, the original size was 15”.

  • General condition:

Road-ready in a pleasant and relatively worry-free condition. The car is currently off the road but can advantageously be registered for use and driven from storage with valid insurance. Next inspection due no later than 2025-11-30.

Facts about the model

The Fiat barchetta was introduced in 1995 – according to Fiat, the name should be written with a lowercase ‘b’. It was produced by the Italian coachbuilder Maggiora until 2003, when Maggiora went bankrupt. After a break of about a year, production resumed at Fiat’s own facilities. The name barchetta means ‘little boat’ and had appeared before in Fiat’s model lineup.

Fiat carried out some updates in 2001, and when production was moved in-house, both the front and rear design were revised. The first model year was 1995, and production ended in July 2005. In total, around 57,700 cars were built, the vast majority during the early years.

The car is a roadster, meaning it has no rear seat and an open body with a folding vinyl soft top. It is front-wheel drive and fitted with a 1.8-liter engine with four-valve technology, producing 131 hp at 6,300 rpm and a top speed of around 200 km/h. Standard equipment included fabric upholstery, although some special models came with leather. A hardtop was available as an option.
