Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car runs well and has been regularly serviced. However, there is no record of when the timing belt was last replaced, so it might be a good idea to replace it.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in very good condition with only a few signs of use.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint is in good condition with few remarks: a small dent near the right front door handle and some scuffs on the front edge of the hood. The wheels are in good condition with decent tires. There is a small chip on the right side of the windshield, and the front spoiler has a small gap fixed with silver tape.

  • General condition:

A very nice 244 that’s worth preserving for the future.

Facts about the model

Sweden’s Most Sold Car Model. From 1983, Volvo decided to drop the old model designations 242, 244, and 245—henceforth, all would be called the 240. In 1984, all versions with fuel injection—GLT, GLE, and Turbo—received a new front with a raised hood and a black grille, and also got new position lights on the front fenders. For 1985, all models were updated with engines designed to reduce internal friction, which lowered fuel consumption and improved cold-start performance. These engines featured a new cast-iron block and an aluminum cylinder head.

The Volvo 240, which had its roots in the 140 series, was introduced in 1974. Over the years, it underwent several changes, and when the successor, the 740, was introduced in 1984, many thought the 240 would disappear. However, its discontinuation didn’t happen until 1993.

Initially, gasoline cars came with either the old B20 or the newer B21 engines, later the B19, B21, or B23 (up to 1984), and from then on only the larger B230 engine. The manual transmissions initially were M40 (4-speed) and M41 (4-speed with overdrive), but were replaced by M45 and M46 the following year. From model year 1983, the M47 (5-speed) was introduced on the GL. The automatic transmission, available as an option, was a 3-speed Borg-Warner BW35 for the 1975 and 1976 models, replaced by the Borg-Warner BW55, also 3-speed, in 1977. From model year 1980, a more modern 4-speed Aisin-Warner AW71 was introduced on the GLE and GLT, and the following year on the Turbo. It became standard on all models from model year 1985.v
