"An unusual Englishman with American roots."

Description

The current owner searched for a long time for a Sunbeam Tiger, drawn to its "wolf in sheep's clothing" image! The Ford 260 V8 was also a big attraction—it's the same engine that Carroll Shelby put in his early Cobras. The car is very well-built, spacious, and comfortable, and there’s certainly no complaint about its performance. The owner has used the car regularly during the summer, taking it on pleasure drives and to various meetings and car events. This Tiger was built on July 9, 1965 (according to the Certificate), but was registered in Sweden on April 26, 1967, as a 1966 model. The car has had few owners since 1967. Originally, it was red, but in 1977 it was repainted in Electric Blue. The paint has aged well but shows its age. The engine was rebuilt by Primoto in Skövde in 1997, and the Tiger has been fitted with a stainless steel exhaust system and received a new clutch in 2005.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and drivetrain run well. The engine is strong and responsive. The brakes function as they should. The odometer has most likely rolled over at least once.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in a used condition with signs of some wear. The seats are in good condition. The door seals have been overpainted.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint, showing signs of its age (from 1977), but still acceptable for such an old paint job. There are spray filler blisters, mainly on the top of the right front fender, and the paint has cracked near the grille—see pictures. The soft top appears to be in okay condition but is a bit "tight" due to infrequent use. The chrome work has a slightly patinated finish.

  • General condition:

A nice Tiger in typical used condition for its age.

Facts about the model

Sunbeam Tiger is a performance model of the Sunbeam Alpine roadster, partially developed by American car designer and racer Carroll Shelby. These were produced from 1964 to 1967 and followed Shelby’s similar V8 conversion of the AC Cobra. Shelby aimed to manufacture the Tiger at his facility in the U.S., but instead, Jensen was contracted to assemble the cars in West Bromwich, England. Two modified Mark I prototypes competed in the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans but did not finish the race.

Two main versions of the Tiger were produced: the Mark I with a 260 cui (4.3 L) Ford V8 engine, and the Mark II, which featured a larger 289 cui (4.7 L) engine.

Production ceased in 1967 after the Rootes Group was acquired by Chrysler, which did not have a suitable engine to replace Ford’s V8.
