"A fun vehicle in usable condition, rarely seen on Swedish roads."

Description

This Ford was stationed in Berlin after the war. In 1956, the car was renovated in Germany and then transported to the Trøndelag Engineer Battalion in Trondheim, Norway. The Ford remained in the Norwegian Armed Forces until 1973, when it was sold to a private individual. According to reports, the car was sold again and transported to Gothenburg in 2019. The first owner in Sweden began another restoration of the car, which lasted for four years, with most attention focused on the engine renovation and some other parts. During this time, parts worth 150,000 SEK were purchased for the Ford. The restoration eventually slowed down, and the current owner bought the car in July 2024. An origin check, registration, and inspection were completed during the summer of 2024. Since then, the current owner has only driven a few miles. Extensive documentation and receipts come with the car, as well as spare parts and door panels (in unrestored condition), see pictures. A 1/4-ton trailer is included in good working condition.

Facts about the model

These vehicles were built between 1941 and 1945. Both Willys Overland (MB) and Ford (GPW) produced this lightweight, all-terrain vehicle for use by the Allies during World War II. Nearly 360,000 units were built by Willys MB, and around 278,000 were produced by Ford. They are four-wheel-drive vehicles with a three-speed gearbox equipped with high and low ranges.

In the summer of 1940, American Bantam and Willys Overland were approached by U.S. authorities to develop a working prototype in 49 days and to produce 70 test vehicles within 75 days. American Bantam won the contract but had poor financial standing and limited resources, so Willys Overland became the supplier of the lightweight all-terrain vehicle. Ford entered the project later and began production in the fall of 1941 due to Willys’ delivery issues.

After the war, many of these vehicles were sold through surplus stores worldwide. In Sweden, they were often used as recovery vehicles, fire trucks, and in agriculture.
