"A stylish and presentable 1930s Chevrolet."

Description

The 1930 Chevrolet Sedan is a typical representative of the American automotive industry of the interwar period. It was a time when cars were becoming increasingly refined and comfortable, while robust and easy-to-service mechanical components still remained at the heart of their design.

Under the bonnet is Chevrolet’s 3.2-litre straight-six engine, which for its time offered both smooth running and good torque. The bodywork is typical of the model year, with a high waistline, separate headlights and chrome detailing. The Sedan also offered generous passenger space, making it one of the more comfortable choices of its era.

Today, this particular car has an attractive, age-related patina. The chrome shows wear and some of the trim is dry in places, as shown in the pictures. The fittings for the rear door handles are included with the car but are currently removed. The upholstery is also in acceptable condition, although it does show some signs of wear; please see the pictures.

The engine is currently running unevenly and may occasionally stall at idle. The radiator is leaking at the top and should be repaired; see picture. For anyone who appreciates vintage cars, this therefore represents an interesting project with the opportunity to work through the mechanical components and details according to their own preferences.

The car also comes with an extensive collection of tyres, 18 in total, both with and without wheels, as well as inner tubes.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

At the time of inspection, the engine was running unevenly and sounded as though it was misfiring on one cylinder. Apart from this, the car’s mechanical components appear to function as they should. The radiator is leaking at the top; see picture. The ignition switch is broken and has been bypassed.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in used condition with some signs of wear and imperfections; see pictures.

  • Exterior condition

The car has been waxed, and some wax residue is visible, but the paintwork is in acceptable, nicely patinated used condition. The underside also appears to be in satisfactory condition.

  • General condition

A usable classic with plenty of potential. This is a good starting point for someone who wants to preserve the car’s patina while addressing the mechanical issues, or alternatively undertake a more comprehensive restoration.

Facts about the model

The 1930 Chevrolet Sedan is a classic American car from an exciting period in automotive history. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, cars developed rapidly, becoming larger, more comfortable and more refined. At the same time, they retained the robust and relatively simple engineering that made them practical to use and maintain.

Under the bonnet is Chevrolet’s 3.2-litre straight-six engine. Six-cylinder engines were an important part of Chevrolet’s model range at the time and provided smoother, more refined performance than the smaller four-cylinder engines. For its era, the engine also offered good torque, well suited to the character of the car.

The Sedan body is equally typical of the early 1930s, with a high waistline, separate front wings and headlights, along with chrome and other period details. The generously sized cabin provided plenty of room for passengers and reflects the increasing emphasis American manufacturers were placing on comfort.

Chevrolet was one of the major players in the American market at the time, competing primarily with Ford. With its six-cylinder engine, spacious body and classic American styling, Chevrolet offered a car that combined practicality with a more upmarket feel.
