Description
The car was modified to meet Appendix K historic racing regulations and equipped with a limited-slip differential and overdrive. The camshaft and other components were upgraded, with the engine reportedly producing around 130 hp. Naturally, it was also fitted with modern safety features such as a roll cage, external bonnet pins, high-quality cut-off switches, and more.
Over the years, the car has changed hands a few times, with each owner further refining and enhancing it. The current owner acquired it in May 2011 and has also competed in several Midnight Sun Rallies, further improving the engine along the way.
Today, this is a well-known and respected rally car—fully functional, road-ready, and awaiting new adventures with its next owner.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
Starts and runs well, both engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive, everything appeared to function properly, considering the special setup of a competition-equipped vehicle. With a bit of agility, you get yourself seated, and on a brief drive, the car feels solid—raw in its driving dynamics and road manners, but undeniably fun.
It hasn't been inspected on a lift, but since a complete overhaul and sheet metal restoration, it hasn't been driven in regular traffic, which has helped preserve its good condition underneath. -
Interior condition
Stripped original interior fitted with a roll cage, safety harnesses, and proper racing seats. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all suited for competition use. Everything appears to function well.
-
Exterior condition
Nice paintwork with a few minor dents and scuffs. Glass, chrome, trim, emblems, and lighting components—as well as all safety features—are in good condition. The wheels and tires are in great shape. Engine bay and luggage compartment are functional and appropriately configured for competition use.

General condition
A P1800S is a true classic and enthusiast’s car—Swedish quality and engineering blended with Italian-inspired design by Pelle Pettersson. In this configuration and condition, it offers a spicier recipe, enhanced by a competition history that includes events like the Midnight Sun Rally.
All in all, this is a historically significant vehicle that rightfully draws attention. And as the cherry on top, it features the autograph of designer Pelle Pettersson on the tailgate, signed during the model’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Facts about the model
For the first two years, the cars were assembled in England by Jensen. Afterwards, production moved to Torslanda, Sweden, and the cars gained the “S” suffix to signify Swedish-built—primarily to highlight the shift in manufacturing location. At the time, “Made in Sweden” was a quality mark that the English-built cars didn’t quite match. Starting in April 1963, the model was officially called the 1800S, initially as a 1963 model year and then continuing as the 1964 model, with few changes.
Significant updates came with the 1965 model year, as with other Volvos—new grille, full front bumper, new wheels, and hubcaps. The 1966 model featured increased engine output thanks to a new exhaust manifold and system, permanently lubricated front suspension, and improved rear suspension. That year was also the last with the characteristic upward-curving side trim on the doors.
In 1969, the car received the B20 engine, an alternator replacing the generator, and dual-circuit brakes. The following year brought the Bosch Jetronic fuel injection system and the “E” designation, along with both aesthetic and safety upgrades.
By 1973, production ended after a couple of years of the 1800 ES model.
In total, approximately 36,000 units were built.
